Description

See the elegant architecture of the churches and narrow streets at the colonial districts of San Lazaro where Hispanic culture in the Arequipa was born.

Stroll down the streets of Yanahuara and admire its buildings built from sillar, a pearly volcanic rock, and enjoy a scenic view of the city's volcanoes in the background. From the Carmen Alto viewpoint, the Misti, Chachani and Pichu-Picchu volcanoes form a postcard-perfect picture.

The Saint Catherine Monastery is about as close to Spain as you can get in South America, with architecture that mirrors that of Seville and Granada. Over 20,000 square meters, this monastery was built in the Mudejar style, most evident in its brightly painted walls.

The Saint Catherine Monastery is home to about 20 Dominican nuns, living in the north of the complex while the rest is open to the public. So large, it is almost like a city within a city.

Here you will find the following attractions: the Main Cloister, the largest in the monastery, this cloister contains dramatic paintings depicting the life of Jesus and Mary, among several confessionals; The Church- with its altar wrought in silver dedicated to Sor Ana de Los Angeles Monteagudo, a holy woman known for her healing miracles buried under the church; Cordova Street, built in the style of Spain with lovely hanging geraniums; Plaza Zocodover, where the nuns gathered on Sundays to barter their religious handicrafts; Sevilla Street, the former kitchen with darkened walls and ceilings from the burned coal and wood in the past and a display of cooking tools; Burgos Street with its charming vegetable garden, and the laundry area with huge storage vats that served as wash tubs.
