American Museum of Natural History
back to New York activities
Discover dinosaurs, ancient sequoia plants and the world's many diverse cultures at the American Museum of Natural History a collection of more than 30 million artifacts all over the world.
The American Museum of Natural History houses an exhibit of more than 30 million specimens in a sprawling 25-building complex. Since opening in 1877, its park-like grounds has grown to cover four city blocks for 46 permanent exhibitions, a famous library, and numerous research laboratories. It is the realization of the life-long dream of naturalist Dr. Albert S. Bickmore, who lobbied for a natural history museum in New York.
The ground floor exhibits include the Hall of Biodiversity, ocean life, meteors, and minerals and gems. The second floor has the Barosaurus exhibit showing the skeletons of a mother Barosaurus cast from original fossils. There are a handful of other exhibits in the third and fourth floors, some of which are North American Indians, fossil fishes and early mammals. Star sightings in this museum are made at the Hayden Planetarium in the Rose Center for Earth and Space, along with the newly-renovated Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. Even though only a small portion of the 30 million specimens are shown at a time, visiting the American Museum of Natural History is always an enjoyable and learning experience.
