Sólheimajökull Glacier
back to Reykjavik activities
Iceland’s icecaps tend to grow then recede. They form tongues of ice that’s just perfect for snowmobiling, icehiking, and iceclimbing. Sólheimajökull Glacier is one of those advancing parts of Iceland’s glaciers, of Myrdalsjokull Icecap in particular. Explore the surrounding snow-covered mountains on snowmobiles but don’t get turned off by the sulphur. This glacier tongue, which takes off from the River Jokulsa, sometimes emits sulphuric acid—hence, its “Stinking River” nickname.
