About Barcelona Cathedral of Saint Eulalia

Amen to the compelling traits of art! The Barcelona Cathedral, a major sight sprawled out in the heart of the Old Town, has remained a testament to the equally provocative nature of art and mysticism. Depicting a rich Catholic past in every intricate gothic interior, visitors are guaranteed to be beguiled with all the tales of the Barcelona past waiting to be told. But it is not only the “then” that provides the context of importance when one speaks of this structure. At present, Barcelona cathedral remains one of the unifying elements for the Catalonians as a sovereign community.

Dating back to the time of the Roman Empire, a basilica was already situated where the Barcelona Cathedral now evocatively stands. It was fatefully destroyed by the Moors in 985 A.D., and it was between 1046 and 1058 when a Roman cathedral was constructed (which included the Capella de Santa Llucia). The construction of the cathedral presently showing the world its faithfully gothic design started 30 years later in 1298 under the rule of King Jaume II. And truly, no civil wars—not even the Black Death—could stand in the way of this religious masterpiece. The main façade (incomplete until 1889) and the spire were beautifully based on the 1408 plan of French architect Charles Galters, and apparently, they are only the tip of the icing. Inside lies the gothic interior of the wide nave and 28 side chapels in true Catalan fashion. Masterfully carved 15th century stalls, too, has a top tier that contains the coats of arms of the Order of Toisón del Oro's 12 knights.Another major highlight lies right beneath the main altar, the crypt housing the alabaster sarcophagus of St. Eulalia, a religious martyr tortured to death in the 4th century by the Romans. In fact, there are 13 geese consistently found in the central courtyard, and they signify the short 13 years of Barcelona patron saint's life.A freshwater fountain, on the other hand, is placed in a corner of the cloisters (adjacent to the cathedral) and is adorned with St. George's statue. If you are awfully captivated by all these and needs an extra fix, the Sacristy Museum is very much inviting with a treasury including 11th-century liturgical objects.
