Description

Our journey starts with a drive to Montserrat. Visit a sanctuary housing the Moreneta. According to legend, the monastery was built around the statue which the Benedictine monks could not move. This sanctuary has been in use for almost a thousand years and must not be missed by any visitor or pilgrim.

We will also get the opportunity to hear a performance by La Escolania de Montserrat, one of Europe’s oldest children's choirs. We will also have the opportunity to visit the fascinating Museum of Montserrat, with its five collections ranging from Archaeology from the Biblical East to Modern Painting and Sculpture.

We can also walk along the paths of the Montserrat parkland which offer different perspectives of the stunning views over the surrounding landscape. There are routes to suit all tastes and energy levels from fairly strenuous treks to gentle strolls around the park area. Another option is to take one of the two rack railways or the cable car which offer different views of the area. Alternatively, we can also admire the majesty of the valleys from the cafe.

After a leisurely morning at Montserrat, we will head to the Colonia Guell which was first set up in 1890 on the initiative of Eusebi Guell, a businessman with an affinity for the arts. We will visit the crypt built by Gaudi and an unfinished church which gives a mysterious touch to the crypt. It is also one of Gaudi’s most frequently studied works on account of the structural innovations with its slanted columns and parabolic and hyperbolic roofs. Admire the superb use of basalt stone bricks studded with polychrome mosaics and stained glass windows. This visit will give us an opportunity to enter the fantasy world of Gaudi, a truly intimate and authentic Gaudi experience.

We will also get an insight into the industrial development of Barcelona at the end of the 19th century. See the factory located on a model industrial estate, where the workers are housed alongside the factory. See how Eusebi Guell improved the social conditions for his workers and take a walk between the old workers’ houses still used for residential purposes, sip coffee in the old “Club Social” and imagine the daily life of workers a century ago.

Park Guell will be our next stop and we will enter a green island reigning over the city. Follow the windy alleys and pass over bridges or under twisting rock pillars. We will be able to admire the fascinating ceramic benches and the fantastic view over Barcelona. We will also see elephant houses and the mysterious marketplace. Marvel at the balance between urbanism and nature offered by the park and let your imagination run away with you as you appreciate the beauty of this tourist attraction.

Montserrat, Gaudi and Modernism (for small groups)

"Adrian Was a most charming and well informed guide. We were four seniors with varying stmina and abilities. Adrian was able to guide us to a wide variety of things that we could do. All of us were able to enjoy Monserrat accoding to our own abilities. Adrian at our concurrance took us to the most fabulous country restaurant for lunch...we were just so impressed and had a marvelous time and enjoyed great food. We then went to Colonia Guell and throughly enjoyed Adrian's insights into Guell as a patron of Gaudi. Adrian gave us a choiceof going back to our hotel orbeing left at Parc Guell. We opted to go to our hotel. it was nice to have the choice. (We went to Parc Guell the next day). As a final help Adrian recommended a great book on gaudi's life (at our request) We all bought a copy as there was a bookshop right near our hotel. We all totally enjoyed the book...a really comprehensive social history and biography. It was in paperback and short. We all read it and had time to discuss it before leaving Barcelona. A really first rate experience all around. totally recommended!"
