We head away from the Mitte district and the pedestrian Cold War sights to take in more of the former East, more of the Wall, and more of what makes Berlin the unique city it is today.

Our Berlin Wall & Cold War Tour heads east along the imposing Karl-Marx-Allee before taking in the colorful East Side Gallery and the powerful Trep tower Park Memorial. From there we return through the former no-man's-land death strip to visit former checkpoints and hear tales of espionage and escape attempts.

To put the Cold War into perspective we'll timeline other important worldwide events to show how these effectively put Berlin at the forefront of Cold War tension.

We break for lunch at nice cafe options just in the former East. This is a great opportunity to ask your guide more questions about the Cold War or the Berlin of today.

Itinerary / Activity Schedule

Eastside Gallery
Explore the East Side Gallery, a kilometer-long stretch of still-standing Wall, famous for its graffiti. It's politically charged and we give you plenty of time to soak it in, so don't forget your camera.

Treptower Park
Explore the imposing Treptower Park Soviet Memorial. This is sure
to be one of the most impressive sights on your European vacation!
More than 5000 fallen Soviet troops are buried here in what is the largest of the 500+ Soviet Memorials in former East Germany.

Classic Propaganda
You'll see many examples of still-standing communist propaganda lining various buildings along our route. Many are now on buildings under historical protection.

Tales of Espionage
Your guide will recount numerous stories of espionage by the CIA, KGB, and Stasi that made Berlin one of the physical focal points of the Cold War.

Street Art
The influence of the Cold War still shape Berlin in many ways. Unlike other German and European cities, Berlin's lively art scene and bohemian lifestyle is readily apparent. See some great examples of what sets Berlin apart from its counterpart European capital cities.

Plattenbau Apartments
Just one block away from the grandeur of Karl-Marx-Allee lies a completely different environment for citizens of the East. Understand the differences not just between life on different sides of the Wall, but also within the realities of the communist East.

More Treptower Park!
The reliefs lining the memorial are the finest of Stalinist propaganda, telling the story from his point of view. The memorial is off the beaten tourist path - yet quite accessible by bike - and not to be missed.

Deathstrip Watchtower
This is one of just few remaining control towers left standing in the former deathstrip. Your guide will explain the 3 different levels of these types of watchtowers and what type of officials were chosen to man these towers.

Cafe Moscow
Among many of the impressive sights along the historic Karl-Marx-Allee is the Cafe Moscow. This cafe, like the rest of the Stalinist boulevard, blatantly shows still-existing communist propaganda.

No-Man's-Land Deathstrip
The fortifications of the Berlin Wall were impressive. See remaining sections not just of the Wall, but also of the breadth of no-man's-land. You'll see firsthand how Berlin is now creatively reallocating this land.

Get Your Questions Answered
Why was the Wall built? Why was it built on that particular location? What else was going on around the world to "justify" the building of the Berlin Wall? Your guide will help you make sense of the string of events from 1945 to 1989 and their impact on Berlin of today.
