Bilbao, the capital of the province of Biscay in Spain, has a rough history of unbridled industrialization. The 19th century onwards saw it prospering economically and in infrastructure, but this came at the expense of slum areas and an industrial crisis later in the 20th century. Today, however, with the relatively recent introduction of the famous Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao is now being revitalized, and is on track to becoming one of the great cities to visit. Travel to this storied city in 2015 with our tours and activities and discover a reinvigorated city that can’t wait to accept you with open arms.
Take a bike tour of Modern and Old Bilbao and explore all that this fascinating city has to offer over a period of 3 hours. Travel to the iconic Guggenheim Museum, whose sweeping Frank Gehry-designed curves represent some of the most important architectural works in contemporary design culture. Walk around Euskadi Square, a modern construction with many trees that keep the traffic out and provide leisurely shade. Enter Palacio Euskalduna, a modern event venue built upon the old site of the Euskalduna Shipyards. Let your guide take you to these places and more as you uncover the great transformation that this city has undergone throughout the years.
Leave the city limits and visit the Vitoria and Rioja Wine Area. Travel south of Basque country and see the Rioja region, where wine lovers come from all over the world to sample the local drinks. Go through lovely mountains to Vitoria, and go on a panoramic tour of the cityscape. Here you’ll visit the Old Quarter, where historical buildings flank you as you walk through old streets. Go on through various towns in Alava province until you reach Laguardia and Labastida, known for its incredible wineries. Pass through streets that have been there since the Middle Ages, and see two old churches and many houses from that period. End the tour with lunch and a visit to a winery, before going back to Bilbao.
