Get your fill of Romania's history and culture in this 5 day tour of the Maramures region, the Bucovina region and the Danube Delta! See how traditional Romanian culture is kept alive in Maramures, the famed painted monasteries of Bucovina and Europe's best preserved river delta - the Danube Delta.

Day 1 - Sighisoara

The first stop for the tour will be "The Pearl of the Carpathians", the town of Sinaia. While in this picturesque mountain resort town, we will be visiting Peles Castle, the former summer retreat of the Romanian royal family and the serenely beautiful Sinaia Monastery. From Sinaia, we'll continue on to the town of Brasov, the most important commercial center among the seven walled citadels populated by the Saxons. Wander around the cobbled streets of the Old Town before we take our lunch. After lunch, we will set off for the UNESCO heritage site of Sighisoara, the only medieval citadel in Europe that is still populated. We will stay for the night in this charming medieval town.

Day 2 - Sighetul Marmatiei

We will head on to the Maramures region after having breakfast. The region is known for the sheer beauty of it's natural landscape and the old villages which have kept the old traditions in their daily lives. We will visit the wooden church of Barsana which features some amazing frescoes with baroque and rococo influences and "The Old Barsana" which was transferred to another location using an old technique. We will then go to the neighboring village of Sapanta where the famous Merry Cemetery is located. Marvel at the colorful wooden crosses that adorn the tombstones and at the remarkable sense of humor exhibited on these masterpieces. Also located within the village is the Sapanta Peri which is the highest wooden church in the world. We will then stay for the night at the charming rural town of Sighetul Marmatiei.

Day 3 - Gura Humorului

After breakfast, we will travel towards Bucovina. We will pass by Prislop Pass, a popular hiking destination; on our way to Ciocanesti. See the unique houses with walls that are painted with traditional motifs and the Painted Eggs Museum within the village. We will the continue on to visit the Bucovina region's famous painted monasteries starting with Moldovita Monastery which was built in 1532. Next we would visit the largest of the monasteries, Sucevita Monastery which was the last painted monastery to be built. Last is the "Sistine Chapel of the Orient", Voronet Monastery. The monastery features a mixture of Byzantine, Gothic and local architectural influences and is associated with the unique blue featured on its frescoes known all over the world as "Voronet blue". We will then stop overnight at the town of Gura Humorului.

Day 4 - Tulcea

We will travel the whole day towards the Danube Delta after breakfast. On our way there, we will pass through many charming towns and villages giving you a picture of the lifestyles of the inhabitants of this area. Our final destination for the day is the city of Tulcea also known as "The Gate of the Danube Delta". The city is one of the oldest settlements in Romania and is the largest city in the delta. We will stay overnight at Tulcea.

Day 5 - Bucharest

We will have a boat tour of the Danube Delta in the morning on its channels. The Danube Delta is Europe's second largest and is the best preserved out of all of Europe's deltas. Get to admire the sheer abundance of wildlife in the delta with a large variety of flora and fauna to see. We will also have a delicious traditional fish lunch aboard the boat. We will then head back to Bucharest at the end of the day.
