History of the Boca Juniors
Boca Juniors was born on Monday April 3rd, 1905 when five young boys living in La Boca neighborhood got together at Solís Square with the intention to found a soccer club.
Without knowing, this group of Italian immigrants wrote the first pages in the rich history of Argentina's most popular soccer club.
The name Boca was taken from that of the team's Buenos Aires neighborhood. The word "Juniors" was added to give it an English tone and enhance its prestige. The lighthearted name "Juniors" was also selected to counteract the infamous “difficult neighborhood” image La Boca had at that time.
During its first years, the Boca Juniors wore different jerseys that changed several times before their well-known, classic blue and yellow jersey was chosen. Their first jersey was pink followed by one with vertical black and white stripes. In 1907 the colors yellow and blue were adopted. One day the team drew inspiration from the Swedish flag of a boat docked in a Buenos Aires port.
The Boca Juniors have shown a great track record in amateur competitions, winning 7 titles: 1919, 1920, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1930 Championships and the Honour Cup in 1925.
With over one hundred years of history, many soccer greats have proudly sported the blue and gold shirt. Of these players, many ended up as soccer idols including: Francisco Varallo, Mario Boyé, Angel Clemente Rojas, Antonio Roma, Alfredo Rojas, Antonio Rattín, Vicente Pernía, Hugo Gatti, Silvio Marzolini, Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta, Martín Palermo and Juan Román Riquelme.
