Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival to Oaxaca and transfer to hotel.
This wonderful city is located in the center of the central district of the state that is placed in the southern part of the country. Oaxaca, the historic home of the Zapotec and Mixtec peoples, contains more speakers of indigenous languages than any other Mexican state.
Day 2 Biking from Oaxaca to Montealban archeological site.
Monte Alban is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. The site is located on a low mountainous range rising above the plain in the central section of the Valley of Oaxaca where the latter's northern Etla, eastern Tlacolula, and southern ZimatlánOcotlán (or Valle Grande) branches meet.
The present-day state capital Oaxaca City is located approximately 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Monte Alban. Visit the site and then bike towards Atzompa town where you can see the production of green clay handcrafts. After visiting the market and stores, we ride 2 kms back to Oaxaca.
In the afternoon, we tour the city, visiting the santo Domingo church which is located next to the Santo Domingo Ex-Convent and Cultural Center. The exterior faces a large esplanade planted with row upon row of an unusual desert succulent, around and through which area run wide walkways. It is located on the corner of Alcala and Cinco de Mayo Streets in Oaxaca City. Seat of the Dominican Order in Oaxaca since the 16th century, the Temple and ex-convent of Santo Domingo form a stately and imposing complex of amazing beauty and interest.
Enjoy the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca, once a very important religious holiday in all of Mexico. Over the years, this holiday has been replaced by more commercial rituals, however, traditional observances of Day of the Dead are still respected in Southern Mexico, where indigenous customs and traditions are still very much alive. In Oaxaca City, the mixing of Pre-Hispanic and Catholic cultural and religious traditions make for a colorful and magical occasion.
Day 3
Biking to San Antonio Arrazola, where many amazing hand made art and wood handicrafts are produce. We follow with biking to Cuilapam, where an impressive church can be seen, then to Zaachila, where an interesting market can be enjoyed. Finally visit the town of San Bartolo Coyotepec where the famous Oaxaca black pottery is produce. Afterwards, we bike back to Oaxaca.
Day 4 Bicycle towards El Tule tree.
This is a huge tree located in the church grounds in the town center of Santa María del Tule, approximately 9 km east the city of Oaxaca on the road to Mitla. It is a Montezuma Cypress (Taxodium Mucronatum), or Ahuehuete in the Nahuatl language.
Bike to Teotitlan del Valle, where many rugs are produced and sold, then to Mitla town and check in your hotel. Visit the archeological site which is located in the town of San Pablo Villa de Mitla. It is famous for its pre-Columbian Mesoamerican buildings. Overnight in Mitla.
Day 5 Bike towards Hierve el Agua petrified waterfalls in the mountains.
Enjoy this unique attraction and then follow to Xaaga to see prehistoric murals in the mountains also. Bicycle back to Mitla.
