What To Expect
Climbing to the summit of a volcano and looking inside its smoking craters is a thrilling experience. If you are a mountain lover, Volcano Adventure is something won't want to miss.
Mount Etna is the second most active volcano on earth and there's no better place on earth to witness and understand the forces and the power of volcanoes. It dominates the skyline of Catania at the highest point of 3,350 meters and its snow-capped summit is visible from anywhere on Sicily's east side. The hike is hosted by an expert alpine guide.
Our tour starts from the Rifugio Sapienza. At 1,910 meters above sea level, it is the southern access point of Mount Etna. Should you need some equipment, you can rent here from several local shops. We ride a cable car up to the Torre Del Filosofo (2,900 meters), and then board a four wheel drive jeep. The climb to the top is challenging, but it's worth the effort. When you reach the upper slopes at 3,350 meters, the air is considerably cooler. It smells like a chemistry laboratory, but the lunar ground beneath your feet is still warm from the lava. It is so impressive to be close to the active craters; nothing grows so far up. The views are superb; we will visit the active vents, the fumaroles area, the eruptive fractures and the awesome cinder cones that opened on the upper volcano's flanks during the spectacular recent eruptions in 2001 and 2002-03. On our way down we head south on foot, towards the impressive craters passing around the pit crater of Cisternazza. Here, another highlight of this Volcano Adventure astounds us: the amazing view of the Valle del Bove (Valley of the Ox), a huge depression site of layers upon layers of lava flows. Finally, we come back down on the soft sandy slopes along the southern face of the Montagnola.
