What To Expect
After meeting your guide, wander past the busy markets finishing up at the end of the day and down a street that's full of quaint shops and vendors selling everything from saris to leather bags to fake Tag watches.
Continue to a popular local eatery, where you'll get to sample some traditional cuisine, including hoppers, egg hoppers and other local savory snacks. Then. proceed to the famous Red Mosque, which is a revered place for Colombo's Muslim community.
From the mosque, head to the famous Bombay Sweet House, known for its falooda and saruwath drinks as well as its sweets. Further down the street, stumble across some achcharu (pickle) carts with different kinds of pickles. See several shops selling varieties of what the locals call murukku. These are crunchy, flavored, fried bits of flour or chick peas.
During the tour, pass by the the Khan Clock Tower. Colombo Harbour and old colonial buildings such as Grand Oriental Hotel and the Cargills Building. Take a quick stop at Old Colombo Dutch Hospital, which is considered to be the oldest building in the Colombo fort area. Since the area is now a renovated complex that hosts some 5-star restaurants, fancy shops and some decent bars and pubs, you may also stop for a quick drink here.
Continue to Galle Face Green, passing many street food stalls and stopping to sample local snacks such as prawn and crab wade. Last stop will be at Nana's, a well-known eatery where you will taste the Sri Lankan kothu, a roti of vegetables or meat and spices.
The Galle Face Green is where locals come to relax after a busy day. Your tour will finish here, but you're free to spend more time at the Green or wander on to the many pubs or clubs that are easily accessible from the area.
