What To Expect
Located in the outskirts of Hanga Roa, Ahu Tahai was restored to perfection in 1974. William Mulloy, the anthropologist responsible for bringing the Moai statues back to their former splendour, and his wife Emily Mulloy, were buried in the site.
Gaze upon the setting sun in the background of three distinct temples: the Tahai, a single eroded Moai, the Vai Uri, a row of 5 Moai facing towards the sea, and the Ko te Riku, a single statue whose eyes are believed to be made of seashell or coral, with obsidian as pupils, and the only Moai to have its eyes restored.
The Moai statues were not only cultural symbols, but also astronomical markers for the ancient Rapa Nui people. This is your chance to watch the mystical sunset on the Ahu temples that have mystified people for ages.
