Old and New Town Walking Tour Experience

This tour explores the dual nature of Edinburgh, marked in its physical layout, architecture, history and literature. The reverse chronological narrative accompanies a journey from the prim and respectable New Town into the clustered closes and churchyards of the Old. From Enlightenment to superstition, respectability to villainy and peaceful progress to religious war this tour will reveal the two sides of Scotland’s history as it has etched itself into the stonework of the city. Beginning in St Andrew’s Square we will discuss the architecture and layout of the New Town before moving to the top of Hanover Street for a photo opportunity. From there we head to the base of the Mound to discuss the construction of New Town and give an introduction to the seedier, bloodier, history of Old Town. With an overview of the Glorious Revolution, the Restoration, the Interregnum and the Union of the Crowns we move on to explore life in the Old Town during the 17th century. Your walk leader will then escort you to St Gile’s Cathedral and Greyfriar’s Kirkyard, where you’ll learn about spitting and a loyal little dog! Our tour ends up in Grassmarket with a great commentary on this diverse city’s nightlife, restaurants, pubs and festival venues!
