During the 1970's and the 1980's, while it was under construction, the Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam was regarded more as the fruit of the megalomaniac commanders ruling Brazil in those years. Today, after three decades, the perspective is quite different.
Responsible for the production of 95% of the electricity consumed in Paraguay, and for 24% of the whole Brazilian consumption, this bi-national enterprise - built by workers, technical operators and engineers from Brazil and Paraguay - proves day after day its magnitude in the national and the international scene.
The first generator unit began operations in 1984, and since then the power plant has broken production and revenue records.
Besides the production of energy, Itaipu also stands as a symbol of environment preservation. The company runs the Biological Haven Bela Vista, continuous reforestation programs and projects that foster fish production as well as wild animal reproduction.
There is also an Eco-museum that tells the story of the construction and maintenance of this unrivaled work.
The tour features a special screening of a movie about Itaipu, from where you can learn more about the impact and contribution of this monumental piece of infrastructure to both Brazil and Paraguay.
The visitor can also visit the Special Tourist Circuit kiosk located near the entrance of the Visitors Reception Center (CRV), next to the Dam. The VCR receives, on average 1,500 tourists per day and has parking facilities, a souvenir shop, a snack bar and an auditorium where films on the Itaipu are exhibited daily.
The tour start off at the Central Observation Deck Station and the Poty Panel where visitors can see a panoramic view of the whole power plant extending up to 7.7 kilometers (the length is equivalent to the height of a 65-story building.
Large tile panels portraying the construction of Itaipu by the great Parana artist Poty Lazzarotto adorns the nearby area.
The tour continues to the Concrete Dam Station where visitors can view the reservoir (with a length of 170 kilometer, maximum width of 13 kilometer and depth varying between 22 to 170 meters) capable of storing 29 billion cubic meters of water. The dam station houses the spillway and water intake gates that generate power. The dam was constructed in a concave shape, not unlike churches and cathedrals
The immense dam wall is made of concrete and has 20 large white pipes. Through each of these pipes, water can flow up to seven hundred to thousand liters of water per second. In fact, only two of the pipes can process the same volume of water as the Iguassu Falls.
The offices and operations of plant are concentrated in the Production Building Station. The building also provides a wide view of the generator units. One can easily feel the vibrations from the machines even through the walls of the building.
On the Central Control Room Station, a group of Brazilians and Paraguayans control the generator units of the plant, through computers and electronic panels. There is a yellow line running through this station to mark where Brazil and Paraguay meets. The division however is only symbolic and the team works in harmony regardless of which country they come from.
The Central Control Room Station is also the security hub of the power plant. Radar monitors the Itaipu Lake region and security is complemented by more than 160 video cameras poised on all areas of the power plant at all times.
At the Trail Station, the water rejoins nature after passing through the turbine. There is also a splendid view of the River Paraná and lucky visitors may see some species of fishes that make the river their home.
