The Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam, the largest in operation in the world, is a bi-national enterprise developed by Brazil and Paraguay on the Paraná River. The installed power output capacity of the dam is 12 million and 600 thousand kilowatts, with 18 generating turbines of 700 thousand kilowatts each. The dam is responsible for supplying 90% of the energy consumed in Paraguay and 25% of all the demand in the Brazilian market. As a work of engineering the dam was elected by the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
