What To Expect
Enjoy a few hours of your day exploring Istanbul's prized attractions with a knowledgeable guide who can tell you all that you need to know about them.
Start off the tour by meeting with your guide at the entrance of the Blue Mosque. As you wait for the doors of the mosque to open, listen as your guide gives you a brief history of the mosque. Wander inside the mosque and discover how it got its name just by seeing its interiors. Sultan Ahmed I, the sultan who commissioned the construction of this mosque was so eager to have it finished that he often assisted in its construction.
Then, head over to another popular tourist spot, the Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia, a 1,400-year-old structure has been around since the 6th century. Functioning first as a Greek orthodox church, the structure was converted into a mosque, then into a museum which everyone can visit today. After its conversion to a mosque, various Christian frescoes and mosaics were plastered over. On your tour inside the mosque, learn how the early Christian icons became Islamic and understand the similarities between all major religions throughout the world.
The last stop of this tour is at the Basilica Cistern. Descend a level below the streets to discover an ancient waterway that had provided the ancient residents of Istanbul with water (and sometimes fish). The 336 stone columns used to build this cistern was gathered from destroyed ancient temples. See medusa-head stone sculptures placed at different angles at the base of each column. Learn how the ancient civilization of Istanbul made use of this cistern as a part of their daily lives.
