Westminster Abbey
This abbey is one of the most famous abbeys in the entire
world thanks to the weddings, coronations on TV...This
abbey is a wonderful example of what the medieval architecture
was. There are a lot of very interesting tombs. This
abbey is very special in English' minds. It's interesting
to see in this abbey the oriental façade with
its two tours, built by Nicholas Hawksmoor between 1734
and 1745; the west nave which is the highest in England
; and the Lay Chapel which possessed wonderful treasures
of architecture.
All Souls
It is possible to see the magnificent beauty of this
church from Regent's Street. In the past, the BBC often
recorded programmes in this church.
Westminster cathedral
This cathedral has been created by Francis Bentley in
a new Byzantine style. It makes a contrast with the
neighbour abbey. Thanks to the square in front of the
church in the north, the cathedral can be seen from
Victoria Street . Indoor, there are the 14 scenes of
the cross way made by Eric Gill during the First World
War. The organ is one of the most beautiful in the all
Europe and is used during the concerts.
Chelsea old church
From the outside, this church doesn't seem very old
but the engravings inside confirms that this is the
perfect duplicate of the medieval church which was bombed
during the Second World War. Thomas Moore made construct
a funeral monument to his wife, and when he wanted to
be after his death. Out of this church there is the
Thomas Moore statue.
Christ Church , Spitalfields
This is the most beautiful church of the six built by
Nicholas Hawksmoor. Its restoration made some trouble
in the English opinion. It possessed some differences
in contrary to other churches.
London oratory
This oratory is known by us thanks to John Henry Newman.
The actual church is from 1884. Most of the treasures
in it are from Italian churches. The 12 statues had
been sculpted by Giuseppe Mazzuoli in the 17th century.
Queen's chapel
Inigo Jones created this chapel. Henriette Marie de
France, Charles I's wife lived there. The inside of
the chapel, with its wonderful altar, painted by Annibale
Carrache is accessible for the parishioners at the beginning
of the spring and at the beginning of the summer.
St Alfege
This church is the most imposing church from Nicholas
Hawkmoor. It was another church there before. It's the
place of the martyrs of St Alfege, who was the bishop
of Canterbury and was assassinated in 1012 by the Danish
invaders. In it, that's possible to see a representation
of the Henri VIII‘s baptism register.
St Anne's, Limehouse
This church has been created in 1724 by Nicholas Hawkmoor.
Its bell tower of 40 meters is the highest of London
St Bartholomew-the-great
This church is one of the oldest churches of London
founded by the monk Rahère, whose tomb is at
the left of the Rel. This church wasn't all the time
a place cult. A man lived there and Benjamin Franklin
worked there in a printing works.
St Bride's
Thanks to its place, St Bride's church became the press'
church. There are some sheets given homage to some printers
and journalists.
St Clement Danes
This wonderful church had been constructed in 1680 by
Christopher Wren. The building is now the church of
the Royal Air Force.
St George's , Bloomsbury
This church had been constructed by Nicholas Hawksmoor
and finished in 1730. The bell tower with a George I
statue had been criticized.
St James, Garlickhythe
This church possessed a carry-sword under its bell tower.
St James's, Piccadilly
St James's church was built by Wren and was his favourite.
The famous writer William Blake had been baptised in
this church. Now the church suggests many demonstrations
and houses a famous café.
St Magnus-the-Martyr
There is a church in that place since more than 1000
years. Christopher Wren constructed this church near
the old London Bridge .
St Martin-in-the-Fields
This church had been constructed by James Gibbs. Lots
of personalities had been buried in this one. During
1914-1917 some soldiers and homeless could live in the
crypt. Now there are some concerts which are given in
the church at lunch time or on evening.
St Mary-le-Bow
This church is called like this thanks to its bows.
Christopher Wren reconstructed it after the big fire
and he kept this architecture. The church had been destructed
by bombs in 1941; there are still the bell tower, and
the two outside walls. In Londoner's mind, a real Londoner
has to be born with the St Mary's bells sound.
St Mary-le-Strand
This church is the first big construction made by James
Gibbs. In this church the ceremony is made by the Women's
Royal Naval Service.
St Mary-Woolnoth
St Mary Church is an example of Nicholas Hawksmoor's
work.
St Pancras
This church had been constructed by William Inwood and
his son Henry, who were both admired of Greek architecture.
They were influenced by the Erechthéion of Athens

St Paul 's
St Paul 's cathedral had been burned and Christopher
Wren had been asked to reconstruct this one. At the
beginning he proposes a plan which wasn't well accepted
but a two years after the first proposition Wren accepted
to make the
reconstruction differently.
St Paul 's Church
This church had been constructed by Inigo Jones. To
enter the church, we have to go round this one. The
portico is often used by the street artists. This church
is the only trace of the project of the actors' church.
St Stephen Walbrook
The parish church had been constructed by Christopher
Wren. This church is considered as one of the most beautiful
church drawing by Wren .
Southwark Cathedral
This church became a cathedral only in 1905. This is
a very old cathedral, a medieval one. In the outside
of the cathedral, a wonderful garden leads to the Thames
.
Temple Church
The temple houses two of the fourth lawyer school: middle
temple and inner temple. The inside of the temple kept
his Elizabethan interior. In the outside the grass leads
to the Thames . |
