Visit the historic Leeds Castle, set on an island and surrounded by 500 acres of beautifully landscaped parkland in the heart of the Kent countryside. It was described by Lord Conway as “the loveliest castle in the world,” because of its idyllic setting.
Continue this journey through history in Canterbury, a fascinating medieval city that has been the center of English Christianity since St. Augustine was sent here by Pope Gregory. We will visit the magnificent cathedral which sits on the site of the original church and where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170. Canterbury is also home to King’s School, which may be the oldest school in England.
We will head next to the White Cliffs of Dover, a port for almost 2000 years and we will see the White Cliffs of Dover which owes its façade to its composition of chalk accentuated by streaks of black flint, and the English Channel, the smallest of the shallow seas surrounding continental Europe. There will also be a photo stop at Dover Castle, called the “Key of England” because of its defensive significance throughout history.
The next stop is Greenwich, where the Old Royal Naval College designed by Sir Christopher Wren dominates the waterfront. You will be able to see the famous Royal Observatory, one of the most important historic scientific sites in the world as it houses the Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian.
Finally, we will take a delightful cruise that takes us from Greenwich to see the splendid riverside views of London to Embankment Pier.
