This is a daytrip that one must not miss. The city of Abydos was the favored necropolis of the Pharaohs during the First Dynasty. There is very little of the city left, though—but what remains stuns archeologists. The gorgeous white limestone Temple of Osiris has given up priceless treasures and knowledge of Ancient Egypt, not the least is the King’s list, a record of Egyptian rulers from Menes to Seti I. A smaller temple is in the area, the Temple of Ramses III. To visit the site, travelers must be accompanied by an armed police convoy.
How to get there
By north-bound train 981 to Al-Balyana (2-hr trip, leaves at 8am). By microbus: from Sohag; there is a tourist bus going back to Luxor.
