King Phillip II ordered the construction of the Royal Monastery of El Escorial and it owes most of its design to its main architect, Juan Herrera. Many of the best artisans of that period contributed to its construction and the Monastery houses the Mausoleum of the Spanish Monarchs.

After admiring this wonderful structure, proceed to the Valley of the Fallen, an impressive 1,300 meter high commemorative monument erected in memory of the fallen soldiers of the Spanish Civil War. It is located in the Valley of Cuelgamuros on the Gadarrama Range within the provincial limits of Madrid. The tour of the monument includes the Basilica, daringly carved into a granite mountain as well as the imposing cross with a height of 150 meters.
