What To Expect
After being picked up from your hotel, travel to the heart of Manila and visit the National Museum of the Philippines. Admire the classic facade of the building, complete with stylized Corinthian columns, ornamentation and Renaissance inspired sculptural forms. Walk through its neoclassical corridors and find a vast and varied collection of relics, including the skull cap of the country's earliest known inhabitant who lived around 24,000 BC. See a large collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts and musical instruments, and extensive displays on the major indigenous groups. The superb museum also houses the Spolarium, a famous painting of the Juan Luna, one of the first recognized Philippine artists.
Proceed to Intramuros, the oldest district of Manila. Also called the "Walled City", the district is completely surrounded by a three-mile-long stone wall, a protection from foreign invasions during the 16th century. Visit Fort Santiago, one of the most important historical sites in the country, where Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero, was imprisoned before his execution in 1896. The Rizal Shrine museum displays memorabilia of the hero in their collection and the fort features, embedded onto the ground in bronze, his footsteps representing his final walk from his cell to the location of the actual execution.
After a picnic-style lunch, walk around the peaceful streets of Intramuros and admire the beautiful architecture of San Agustin Church, Casa Manila, and see fascinating colonial houses, cobblestones and other historical treasures.
Take a short stop at Rizal Park, a historical urbane park situated next to Intramuros. See the famed Rizal Monument, which stands a few meters away from the marker indicating the actual execution site of the National Hero.
Then, proceed to Harbor View, a long-standing restaurant along Roxas Boulevard. Take delight in a sumptuous dinner of fresh seafood best enjoyed with the breathtaking view of the golden sunset of Manila Bay.
