What To Expect
Take an adventure to the Somme region, the countryside in France which features a complete tour of its historic World War I ruins. This tour will give participants a fresh look on the historical battlefields on the countryside. Considered as the largest battle that occurred during the World War I, the Battle of Somme lasted from July 1 to November 18, 1916; with the British and French forces as allies against the Germans.
Participants will be given the chance to visit the Villers-Bretonneux city, the place where Australian soldiers joined the forces of the British army against the German troops. The Australian National Memorial is another place to visit in this city. This museum is dedicated to the 11,000 Australian soldiers who bravely recaptured the city from the Germans.
A stop at the La Boisselle is necessary to view the Lochnagar Crater. This crater, measuring 90 feet deep and 300 feet across, was created with the efforts of the British army to stop the Germans from advancing into the city. The Royal Engineers of British dug a tunnel measuring 50 feet deep and made a mine containing 25 tons of ammonal. Once the mine was detonated, 500,000 tons of chalk was scattered across the field with debris exploding 4,000 feet into the air.
The Thiepval village will also be visited during this tour. Among the significant areas in this village includes the Franco-British Memorial and the World War I Cemetery. The Beaumont-Hamel village, another French village that The Germans had occupied, is also a part of this tour.
A one-hour drive to Peronne will be enjoyed by the participants as they are taken to the Historical Museum in Peronne where a better understanding of World War I can be obtained. A knowledgeable guide will educate participants on the daily lives of those who have experienced the war through their testimonials.
After a long day of World War I tours, participants can also take optional transfers back to their hotels or residences in Paris with a separate and cost-effective fee.
Without the hotel transfer option, this tour will end with the transport of participants back to the center of Paris.
