What To Expect
We will bike along the dirt road until the pineapple plantations, and be treated to an insightful commentary on how the fruit is cultivated and its importance to the local economy. We will then follow asphalt paths that go uphill until we reach the nature reserve of Pinhal da Paz.
Pinhal da Paz is a forest reserve and recreational park that spans 49 square kilometers in the center of the Picos region of Sao Miguel island. What was once called the forest of the creatures, this former land of volcanic outcroppings and eroded pyroclasts was patiently cultivated with wild pines, ornamental and exotic plants, and eucalyptus. Eventually this barren site became a rich haven of orchards and pastureland.
Enter this marvelous feat of human diligence and love for nature! Enjoy the array of facilities, including picnic and barbecue areas, animal paddocks for ducks and deer, a children's playground, a hedge-maze and an open field for any outdoor activity imaginable!
Follow dirt roads to Pico da Cruz, a traditional farm with astonishingly lush plantations. Here you will get to taste the flavors of the island as you are presented with cheeses, fruits and regional products! See the renowned lusitan horses that are used in equestrian shows, and escape to serenity and calm as you pass by black sand beaches on the way back.
