Romancing the Countryside!

Day 1
Catacombs
Drive down the Appian Way for the San Sebastian or San Domitilla catacombs, centers of medieval pilgrimage. Dive into narrow corridors to explore ancient Christian burial grounds. Go down three levels beneath the magnificent St Clement’s Church to see the remains of a 4th century basilica. Deeper down are the ruins of older buildings from the time of Emperor Nero and a shrine dedicated to the oriental divinity Mithras. Take a tour also of the Mamertine Prison, where Sts Peter and Paul were held prisoner.
