What To Expect
Meet your tour escort and group just outside the Vatican Museums, before official opening hours. Visit the Sistine Chapel, where we'll have the privilege of being the first group to enter. On the way over, your tour escort will provide you with some basic information on what to look for once we enter and you are free to take in the beauty of the chapel on your own. Inside Michelangelo's magnificent chapel, in the serene atmosphere created by the absence of crowds, time seems to magically slow down and the precious minutes we have before groups start trickling in will seem to go on for hours!
Appreciate the beauty of the Creation of Adam and the Last Judgment, then we will move on to St. Peter's Basilica. Your tour escort will lead you through the side access to the Basilica directly from the exit of the Sistine Chapel, avoiding the long lines that can form at the external entrance. On the way over you'll enjoy an introduction to the Basilica and the amazing sights you'll encounter within.
Marvel at the stunning beauty of Michelangelo's moving Pieta and Bernini's 96-foot-high masterpiece - a baroque baldachin (altar canopy) with twisting columns, cast using bronze 'recycled' from the Pantheon.
Enjoy some free time exploring the main level of the Basilica then you will be led down to the Crypts of the Popes, housed in the space between the older 4th century Basilica and St. Peter's, which was built on top of it. See the tombs of many of the Church's most important popes; it was considered a true honor for a Pope to be buried here. The tour concludes at 09:30 outside the entrance of the Basilica leading on to Bernini's architectural masterpiece, the St. Peter's Square.
