What To Expect
Explore the Jewish catacombs of the Vigna Randanini in Rome on this exclusive sightseeing tour! Discovered in the 19th century on the ancient Appian Way, the fascinating catacombs are a series of underground burial galleries with tombs carved into the area soft volcanic stone.
Meet your guide on the Via Appia Pignatelli and head underground to learn how the deceased were interred in painted loculi, cubicula, and kokhim. The presence of these kokhim set the Jewish catacombs apart from Rome pagan and Christian catacombs.
Your guide will be an expert archaeologist, classical historian, medievalist or scholar certified in the study of caves. The catacombs are only open by special appointment, and are one of only 7 known complexes utilized for Jewish burials.
Explore the remarkable catacombs, which are in good condition. Their relatively smaller size, compared to many Christian catacombs, allow for excellent examination of the inscriptions and deep chambers in which the deceased would be buried perpendicular to the wall, with openings sealed with marble epitaphs.
