About Salalah

The second-largest city in Oman is Salalah, capital of the province of Dhofar, and it represents a rare wet, tropical climate in the otherwise dry Arabian Peninsula. It has become a rather recent tourist phenomenon, with day visitors to historic sites in the city and around the region a frequent sight. Travel to Salalah now with our 2015 tours and packages and experience Dhofar’s capital the way it was meant to be.

Explore the capital of Dhofar and some of its most interesting attractions. Start at the Salalah Frankincense Museum, located at the site of the 12th-century ruins of Zafar, a trading port at the time. Frankincense was one of the commodities traded here for Indian spices, and its history reflects that of the Salalah as well. In the Museum, you will learn about Salalah’s history all the way back to 2000BC through kilometers of walking paths. After the museum visit, pass through the Salalah Gardens, where many local cultivated plants can be found growing freely in a lovely environment. Go to the Gold Souk where artisans have crafted jewelry of resplendent gold and silver, and to the Frankincense Souk where the mixed scents of Oriental fragrances waft and form the very atmosphere.

Head out of the city and take a cultural day private tour. Drive to the Qara Mountains and through the beautiful Wadi Sahanwoot to pay a visit to a family that lives in the mountains. Gain insight into local traditions and culture, as well as the daily lives of these people. From there, proceed to the Haloof (rocky) mountains to the Wadi Ayoun, whose verdant foliage is a perfect photo opportunity. Finally, enter the Tomb of Hiob, or Job, where it is alleged that the biblical figure Job is interred.

Go on a tour of Jebel Qamr and experience more of the natural beauty of the area. Pass through Mughsayl Beach, one of the best beaches that you can see in Salalah, as you travel to the Jebel Qamr Mountains. See the Frankincense Trees and ride along winding roads as you ascend to an altitude as high up as 1200 meters. Go on to Al Howta Bay and its magnificent beach area.
