Red Butte Garden is a botanical garden at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon managed by the University of Utah.
Red Butte Garden is the largest botanical garden in the Intermountain West that studies regional horticulture. There are 100 acres of gardens, walking paths and natural areas with hiking trails, showcasing Utah’s richly diverse natural area. The garden developed from humble beginnings as the plant research ground of the University of Utah. Thirty years later, the land was designated a State Arboretum by the Utah State Legislature. It transformed into a regional botanical garden when the University of Utah provided it 150 acres of land at the Red Butte Canyon. By then, the garden's concentration was not just limited to horticulture, but also environmental education and conservation. After opening in 1985 to the public, the site has grown in gardens and facilities. Red Butte Garden has over 10 themed gardens, an Orangerie, a 3,000-seat amphitheater and a gift shop. Red Butte Garden receives 150,000 visitors yearly and holds various community events besides its seasonal flower shows. Events include the popular Outdoor Concert Series, film screenings, cultural performances and educational programs. The garden also holds nature-inspired art exhibits featuring local artists. Besides gardeners and nature lovers, the multipurpose garden is sure to appeal to anyone seeking recreational activities, quality performances and special events.
