“A very interesting tour! Our guide had excellent English and was very knowledgable. The lunch provided was delicious, and the experience of seeing the DMZ was fantastic. Highly recommended. David B., Canada – See more reviews
What To Expect
From the downtown Lotte hotel or President Hotel Seoul, we take an hour-ride through Jayuro (Freedom Road) motorway to the Imjingak, the northernmost point bordering North Korea. Upon your passport check at the Unification Bridge checkpoint, continue on the bus to the Camp Bonifas, the gateway of the Joint Security Area (JSA). Before being allowed to commence the tour, you will be given a briefing after which you must sign a document. On the tour, see the House of Peace that provides facilities for non-military and civilian meetings between South and North Korea. Visit the Freedom House for South-North contacts and meetings. You'll also see the Liaison Office. The JSA is an 800 meter wide enclave, roughly circular in shape, bisected by the Military Demarcation Line separating South and North Korea.
Visit the Military Armistice Commission Conference Room where the border cuts a path right through the center. You may walk around the room and hop from South to North if you wish. Take a short drive next to a hilltop where you can look out and see the North Korean observation posts, the site of the July 27, 1953 armistice, the 72-hour bridge from North Korea to the JSA, the North Korean propaganda village, and Gijeong-dong where the world's largest flag (35m x 28m) hangs on a 160 meter-tall flagpole.
A little way down the hill is the site of the Axe Murder Incident. A memorial monument is set up on the round platform marking the murder site. Next to the site is the Bridge of No Return. Its middle portion runs through the Military Demarcation Line. Korean War Prisoners crossed this bridge going to the other side. If they choose to cross, they would never be allowed to return, hence the name.
The Bridge of No Return and the Axe murder site presents the stark reality and immense tragedy of divided Korea.
