Veliko Turnovo, the capital of the second Bulgarian Kingdom, is superbly situated on four hills. The houses are at the foot of the hills, perched one above the other, crowning the steep streets with their gables. Picturesquely situated in the heart of the Balkan Range, for 800 years, Veliko Turnovo has been mirroring its regal face in the waters of the meandering Yantra River. The city’s biography is the history of the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185 - 1393) Twenty – two kings ruled here and forged the destinies of Bulgaria.

The houses in the village of Arbanassi resemble fortresses on the outside and are artistically fashioned and beautifully decorated inside. They inspire awe with their austere appearance – high solid walls, heavy gates, iron grids and secret hiding – places.

One of the five preserved churches, the Nativity of Christ (17th c.), is a priceless treasure – trove of Bulgarian National Revival culture. Dug into the ground, the plain looking church is a genuine art gallery of biblical scenes with over 3500 strikingly realistic figures, painted by unknown, but indisputably talented artists throughout the ages.
