The National Museum of History and The Boyana Church

The National Museum of History in Sofia was established in 1973 and is one of the largest history museums on the Balkans, home to 650,000 items and the largest archaeological and historical archive. The Museum's collection is its greatest treasure, with materials going all the way back to prehistoric times. In the year 2000, the Museum was relocated to Boyana, in the former residence of Todor Zhivkov, one of the leaders of the People's Republic of Bulgaria.

The Boyana Church, meanwhile, is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church situated in the Boyana village near Sofia. The monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage llist and one of the most completely and perfectly preserved monuments of Eastern European medieval art. The frescoes in the church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings.
