During the second half of 19th century, puppetry was the most popular performance art. This guided visit inside the Old Puppet Maker's Lab is very different from the usual attractions for tourists. You will meet the only family in Sicily that makes these puppets and have performed in Italy and the rest of the world since 1921. More than just staging a show, the Napoli family will explain to students, tourists and lovers the technique and the rules of this old tradition inside their traditional lab in Via Reitano, situated in the heart of Catania.
The members of the family work with hand puppets, costumes, sceneries and all that is required for a show. The most interesting thing about Sicilian puppets is that each of them is a unique work of art: a wooden sculpture with metal and cloth.
The visit begins with an introduction to the materials and the old tools used in creating these works of art. The visitors will also be allowed to handle the puppets. At the end of the visit, you will enjoy a short performance.
After leaving the Napoli family's lab, you can enjoy a stroll with your tour guide along the narrow streets of the colorful and picturesque open-air fish market. There will be free time to explore the Baroque town, so why not visit its monuments or its numerous quaint shops, boutiques, cafés and ice-cream bars?
Should you wish to remain in the area, it is definitely time for lunch. If you wish to enjoy an excellent meal, we will show you a typical Sicilian trattoria, situated in one of the narrow streets of the historical centre. Their specialties include pasta and local fish dishes matched with the best of Sicilian wines.
