What To Expect
The splendor of lost Moorish architecture is ready to greet you and take you on an experience that no other castle has before! Unlike nearly all European palaces with a straight interior plan, the Alhambra and its Nasrid palaces are almost like a maze, its alcoves and courtyards winding snakelike through the inside, leading to more hidden rooms, courtyards and dead ends. Astonishingly, the palace fell under neglect in the 18th century, even inhabited by squatters, until its glorious restoration in the 19th century.
Admire the massive facade of the palace of Charles V, a monumental Renaissance structure that set the bar for the architectural innovations during its time. It follows the Roman style of a Colosseum, with a circular blueprint and an octagonal chapel. Its construction manifested the triumph of Christianity over Islam in Spain, being erected in the same site as the Alhambra.
Step into the ethereal Generalife Gardens and get lost in its labyrinthine paradise of ponds, fountains, courtyards, statues and flowerbeds that were made for kings! It was constructed as a retreat place for the Nasrid royalty, and is now open to the public as a relaxing getaway from the harsh realities of daily life.
After the tour of the Alhambra, board a train for a tour of the Granada city center! There is something in Granada that will suit every fancy, from the fabulous view of the city bathed in the sunset at the Mirador de San Nicolas, the romantic arced structure of the Puerta de las Granadas, the lush greenery and natural beauty of the Forest of Alhambra, the relaxed atmosphere and ideal environment for people watching in the Paseo de lost Tristes, and the Albaycin, which is like its own city within a city that still retains the Arabic influences of Spain in its architecture and its people.
You will be given free time to experience the dining and shopping culture in places such as Calle Alhondiga, Calle Recogida, Puerta Real, Plaza Mariana Pineda and Calle Molinos. We will then go back to the Alhambra for the return trip to Malaga.
