What To Expect
After meeting with your guide, come aboard a comfortable, air-conditioned single deck bus and get to the beautiful village of Zaanse Schans in just 20 minutes.
This neigbhorhood will take you back to the past and make you feel how it was like to live in the Netherlands in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is home to a vibrant collection of working windmills, traditional houses, barns, shop and museums, built in the typically Dutch wooden architectural style since 1961, during the golden age of the Zaan region. At that time, the town was developed into an industrial area on a scale never seen before, with 600 active windmills: wooden factories powered by wind.
Upon arrival, follow your guide and begin your tour by visiting the Clog Museum, a typical Wooden Shoemaker Shop and a Cheese Farm where you will get to taste delicious Dutch farmer cheese!
Then, your guide will tell you all he knows about Zaanse Schans and its unique character, teach you local history and culture, and give you insider’s tips about what to do and where to go, before you can enjoy some time on your own to further explore the town. Stroll along the windmills, barns and other buildings, and marvel at the wonderful houses painted in traditional colors, that were once home to rich windmill owners and merchants.
