The Jordaan area dates back to the early 17th century, and was created for the city's working class and immigrants. As many of these immigrants came from France or near in the agricultural part of town, it was named Jardin, which means "garden" in French. This word eventually changed into Jordaan, the name of the district today.
In 1980 started a large urban renovation, tranforming the working class area into a trendy place, attracting students, artists and young entrepeneurs, while the original inhabitants moved to satelite towns such as Purmerend and Almere. Hear many stories and anecdotes about these contrasting periods in the Jordaan along your walk, and learn insider's tips about great local restaurants, shops, attractions, activities, public transport and more.
