What To Expect
One of New Zealand's top destinations, the Bay of Islands, is located near the northernmost tip of New Zealand and 250 km north of Auckland. Renowned explorer Captain James Cook gave the Bay its modern name when he stopped here in 1769 during his epic round the world voyage.
White sand beaches and bays stretch around a stunning coastline, with a plentiful marine wildlife. In summer visitors can stroll beneath the vivid scarlet pohutakawa trees, all part of a subtropical wonderland which has an average summer temperature of 24 degrees.
On this 2-day tour, we visit famous sites in the area and cruise around the famed islands.
Day 1: Auckland - Russell
After pick-up from hotel or Quay Street, we head over to Auckland Harbor Bridge via Auckland's northern suburbs. Next we visit Whangarei, Northland's only city and largest port. We continue on to Waitangi Treaty House. Enjoy a guided tour of the 506 hectare (1000 acre) Waitangi National Trust Estate that was gifted to the nation by Lord and Lady Bledisloe in 1932.
Our next stop is at Russell. Tour around this fascinating township with its early whaling and political history. Formerly known as Kororareka, it was the first permanent European settlement and sea port and the first capital of New Zealand.
Then we head over to the hotel located on the waterfront of Paihia for overnight stay.
Day 2: Hole in the Rock Cruise - Auckland
On Day 2, we report to Paihia Wharf for the Cape Brett Hole in the Rock Cruise. We cruise around the 144 islands that make this location so famous as you head towards Motukakoko (Piercy Island). If conditions permit, we travel through the iconic 210 ft hole at sea level created by wind and waves. Keep a look out for bottle-nose dolphins and other marine life.
After the cruise, you will have some free time to explore Paihia or simply relax on the beach. We return to Auckland in the early evening.
