What To Expect
Visit two of New Zealand's most famous destinations in 2 days!
Day 1: Auckland - Waitomo - Rotorua
Travel the main Southern Highway through small rural townships steeped in early pioneer history. Visit Waikato, New Zealand's largest dairy and sheep farming province. Travel the outskirts of Hamilton City, via small farming settlements towards the King Country, birth place of the Maori Monarchy.
A trip to New Zealand will not be complete without a visit to the world-famous Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. See hundreds of limestone formations and the Arachnocampa luminosa glow-worm, unique to New Zealand. This experience is made even more magical by drifting silently on a boat through a Glow Worm Cavern lit up with thousands of tiny glow worm lights.
Then, continue on to Cambridge. Drive through what was the main frontier settlement for the British constabulary during the Maori land wars, now a popular horse breeding area.
Next, head on to Rotorua, New Zealand's highest city. Situated 305 meters (1000ft) above
sea level and located inside the rim of a volcanic crater, it is an area of great geothermal activity.
Afterwards, go on an Agrodome Farm Tour. Take a stroll among the sheep and check out the wool production on this typical New Zealand farm. Watch a live sheep shearing demonstration in a typical New Zealand shearing shed. Then, head over to the Woollen Mill to view a live demonstration of wool processing using a 100 year old carding machine.
Next, see Lake Rotorua, one of the 16 fresh water lakes in this district renowned for its year round trout fishing and water activities. Continue on to the Government Gardens - large formal gardens which house the historic tudor style museum and blue baths.
Then, catch the Te Puia Maori Concert, inside the Te Puia sacred Marae (meeting house) surrounded by the carvings of ancestors. Be treated to the perfect harmonies, Poi, Haka and Tititorea (stick dance).
Finally, visit Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, some of Rotorua's most famous attractions. See woodcarvings and weaving displays in the Maori Village. Observe the thermal valley with the famous Pohutu geyser, fumaroles and boiling mud pools. Then, time permitting, there will be an opportunity to wander through the nocturnal Kiwi House.
Afterwards, head over to your hotel near Whakarewarewa.
Day 2: Lake Taupo - Auckland
If you have come as far as Rotorua, why not extend your trip with a visit to Taupo? First, discover geothermal wonders at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Watch the Lady Knox Geyser erupt, see boiling mud, the Champagne Pool and Devils Cauldron.
Next watch the spectacular sight of the Waikato River crashing over the Huka Falls. Next, visit Lake Taupo, the largest lake in Australasia, created over 1,800 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption. See also Aratiatia Dam, Wairakei Geothermal Power Station and one of the World's largest Man-Made Radiata Pine Forests.
We return to Auckland in the evening.
