There are so many volcano tours to choose from, and I am so glad that I picked this one. Kapohokine has a great staff and our guide was just awesome. The dinner was totally yummy and what a great location too. The farm was hella cute! ^_^ We were lucky when we went and the lava was flowing a lot so we got to see a ton of stuff. Gotta say, seeing lava reach the ocean is really awe inspiring. Do this tour! Seriously, you won't regret it :D

We had a great tour of the volcano, the tour guide was very informative. We took in a coffee plantation along the way as well as a... stop at black beach(black sand and lava formations). the volcano was not spouting high in the air however there was a nice glow as our pictures show, one must remember it is nature and doesn't always do what we want, at least it was better than the night before when nothing was happening. It was an extremely long day and by the time we got back to our hotel we were ready to turn in. more

Mr. Anonymous

By far the best activity I did on my vacation. Sand, my tour guide was fun energetic and well informed. She filled the 9 hour trip... with fun facts and great information about the Big Island. I would recommend this trip to anyone who is interested in seeing the volcano. If your not sure if this tour is for you, just ask yourself if you want to have a great day, eat delicious food, and see one of the most amazing spectacles on the planet. The contrast between viewing the volcano during the day and night is must see. more

Cassidy G

A very wonderful experience. Our guide, Sam, was enthusiastic and provided so much information. Dinner in the midst of Kiluea in t...he background was so cool. This activity was terrific. more

Planemark

This tour exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide Emma was great and made the tour very enjoyable. We went to Hilo for one ni...ght so we could see the volcanoes. It was great to see the volcanoes during the day and night. There was only one other couple on our tour so it was a small intimate group. Dinner was really good; good choices and a salad bar etc. Yes, we went to locations you could go to on your own. However, it was great to have someone drive you (especially in the rain), provide lots of information and answer all our questions. Would recommended this tour to anyone going to Hawaii wanting to see the Volancoes! more

Becs&Glen

Absolutely awesome day, we highly recommend this tour and especially our tour driver Aaron who was extremely personable, welcoming... and provided a wealth of fascinating information. Aaron was not only professional and knowledgeable in making the day interesting he went above and beyond to ensure everybody was well taken care of which did not go unnoticed and very much appreciated. The dinner meal was excellent and venue by volcano spectacular. An experience not to be missed. more

Kathy and Randy

Was awesome...very amazing and informative...will take my friends and relatives on it when they come to town...

William C Mason

This excursion was worth every penny. Marcus was excellent. He was friendly, fun, and very knowledgable. We learned so much and ha...d a blast. The volcano at night is not to be missed. What a site. Bravo! more

S. Dressler

There was some confusion about pick up location-tour company waited at our hotel while we waited at a pick up location given to us... by on line company. However this bumpy start was saved by our tour guide, Aaron. He was a great tour guide, coffee farm was interesting and provided a great lunch. Volcano house dinner was excellent, stop at black beach and southermost bakery was wonderful. Unfortunately weather wasn't great but got to see the glow of the crater. The tour company also phoned us the next day to apologize for the pick up issue. Would definitely recommend this tour. more

Kathy

Tour was excellent, as expected. However our tour guide, Grant, was fantastic. He really made a good tour great!

Chloe

Tour was awesome, guide was extremely knowledgeable, and dinner at the Volcano House was amazing.

Alton

Angelique was awesome!!! The other couple cancelled so it was a one on one tour and we had a great experience. This was our honeym...oon and thank you guys for making it extra special. more

Carmine and Amanda

Well planned afternoon! Angelique did a great job guiding the tour. She took care of everyone's need, naturally and kindly. ...Great value for the money, specifically for the first timers. more

Miladin

This was an awesome trip! Our tour guide was amazing. We visited the black sand beaches, steam vents, lava tube, and our dinner ...was right in front of the volcano crater at the Volcano House, breathtaking!! Then at night, we viewed the volcano from the museum, totally different experience than the day time viewing. You have to see it at night. Our tour guide provided us with cold towels, snacks throughout the day, water, ect. This trip exceeded my expectations and we learned so much from our guide! more

Chris

We had a wonderful time on this tour. Our guide, Emma, was awesome! She was very knowledgeable and made the tour interesting and ...fun! We swapped stories about volcanoes, books, family. I truly felt that we were cousins by the end of the tour. Mahalo, Emma more

Julia Gore

Tour was great. Guide was very informative and ensured we had everything we needed.

Natascha

Our tour guide was great, not a review we give loosely... Eric was curteous, excellent driver, knowledgeable and fun!

Deb Ross

A full day of learning about lava and seeing it firsthand (cooled by years). Really enjoyed the dinner and the view. Loved the g...uided tour - so much better than doing it yourself. Don't expect red glowing lava. We saw the lava glow after dark very clearly and orange. more

David

We had a wonderful time. Our tour guide Chris was terrific. This is a truly don't-miss-it tour.

Suzi K

We did the tour of volcano national park from Hilo on our honeymoon. Rich, our tour guide, couldn't have been better. He talk...ed the entire way and taught us not only about the Hawaii's nature, the volcanoes, but also about Hawaiian culture. You could really tell how much he loves Hawaii and heritage. This was definately well worth it! The food wasn't bad at The Volcano House, beautiful view. Rich came prepared with flash lights, snacks, and water. We had 6 people in our group, which made it easy to ask questions and chat throughout the day. Thanks so much Rich!! -honeymooners from Hershey, PA more

I went during the off season and got a private tour! I got to do things that most people in a group would not and go at my own pac...e. I had a great tour guide and had a blast. I would definitely recommend this tour. more

sjpIdaho

Mike was such a great tour guide! Every stop along the tour was amazingly breathtaking!

RoS

Great day, Rich our guide was the best! Recommend it highly to all...

Joe

There aren't many active volcanoes in the whole world so this is a bucket list type thing. You can't get that close to... the active volcano but you can get close enough to see the lava (about a mile away). Plus, you don't want o get too close anyway! (not healthy). The side excursions on the way to the Volcano National Park were good. Went to a coffee farm, winery, southernmost bakery that sells those great malasadas, the lava tube, the steam vents, etc. It is an all day excursion but well worth it. It's amazing how many climates there are on this island and you really see the differences as you go on this excursion. The museum at the volcano national park was very informative. Great excursion!! more

Jill

A really awesome tour! Modern, comfortable, transportation-nice lunch and dinner included... a bonus was wine tasting,a bakery stop..., and getting to see sea turtles at the black sand beach. Aaron, the guide, had so much knowledge about volcanos - it was incredible! more

Kelly

Henry our tour guide was wonderful and very passionate about getting the most out of our tour. If if you are thinking about a tou...r that takes you down to see the actual lava close up, this is not the tour for you. However what you do get to see on this tour is the black sand beach, the wine tasting tour (which is one of two wineries on all the islands) with dinner, walking through a lava tube, seeing the steam vents and the night glow. more

Tracy Wilmot

This guided tour was worth every penny. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and made the entire trip fun. Being taken to some l...esser know locations and then being told about the history of the area and the lava flow was great. Mixing in local Hawaiian legends was just great. The dinner and wine tasting at the winery was an added plus. I highly recommend this activity! more

Phillip Krupp

Enjoyed touring the island with our guide Campbell. The van was comfy and the stops were interesting. We were well taken care of w...ith drinks, snacks and bathroom breaks. Campbell narrated the entire tour and had extensive knowledge of the island history and ecology. Would highly recommend this company. more

The Arizona Ladies

Our tour guide Lawrence made this the best tour we have ever been on. His knowledge and "gift of gab" was essential in ...making this a great tour. Thank you Lawrence more

Steve Barbour

From morning 'til night John was the ultimate tour guide--intellect, humor, history, sociology, insight, equanimity, John bat...hed us in sweet knowledge and well being. Could not be improved upon. We had 13 tourists so was puzzled by the phrase in the tour title "Groups of 1 to 3" I was expecting a semi-private tour--not a complaint, merely an observation on clarity in advertising. more

Rolland

The afternoon/evening tour from Hilo to the observation deck near the volcano was a good value for people that didn't want to... do a lot of walking. Our guide was knowledgeable and conducted the tour in a safe manner. We saw the lava flows from the 1980's, black sand beach, lava tube, caldera of the volcano, viewed and experienced the volcano steam vents, had a fair meal at a cafeteria and then viewed the lava pool from the observation deck at sunset. All in all - recommend this tour. more

Dave

Informative and entertaining. Whale watching was exciting with many Mom/Child pairs in sight. Naturalist was very informativ...e answering any and all questions that arose. The Luau was culturally different from anything we had been exposed to before. The dancing, stories and history of the Polynesian peoples when coupled with the food and hula lesson were just what we were looking for. Top notch. We would do it again. more

Mr. Anonymous

We had a great time with Emma, our guide. We spent time down at the Puna Girl farm (which was great), enjoyed a nice meal there an...d then down to the black sand beach at dusk. It was beautiful. Our newest "cousin", Emma was really funny and warm. We loved her. Although we didn't get to see any lava (volcanoes do not always cooperate), we had a great day. She made us all feel like her newest relatives. She made it great. Thanks, cousin! more

Nancy

We both enjoyed the tour!! The guide was very knowledgable and talked a lot as we drove. He was also able to answer many questions... about not only the big island, but the other islands in Hawaii as well. He kept the energy high and the conversation going. We would have liked a bit more hiking though. If you are looking for lots of hiking, this is not the tour for you. We went by van to many different sites and that was great too! And we were able to walk freely and had plenty of time at each place. We could enjoy it enough to get a taste and leave a craving for if we come again. The lunch was a scrumptious sandwich. And dinner was nice as well. The whole tour ate together at one table. We went as a couple, so it would have been nice if we could have individual tables. But it was nice to chat with the other tour attendees. Overall it was good!!!! We got to see a lot of the Kona side of the island. Met some nice people. Saw wonderful views of the volcano. And learned a lot about the plants and animals native (and not native) to the island. Thank you to Erik our guide!!!! more

Ashida2

Was a good trip. Guide knew a lot about the island ant told it in a humorous way. Was dissapointed to see no lava flow, but i pick...ed the wrong time. more

fiegea

The tour was very well planned and executed. Ken was a knowing guide and had a lot of interesting observations/comments making the... tour something extra Viewing the volcano glow at night is a must experience. more

Henrik

Fantastic Tour and loved our driver. Only complaint on this tour was having to climb in and out of the back of a small bus.

Michele

The tour guide was very courteous, accommodating, and knowledgeable. Lunch was OK. The dinner at winery (and the tour of the winer...y by the owner) was great. I am not a wine drinker, but I enjoyed the tour nevertheless. The finale of watching the volcano smoke out red hot lava was just awesome. The driver had very little sleep, he said. Perhaps because he commuted from another place and had to get back after he dropped late in the night. So, we were scared a bit. A great, guy, though. Lastly, book book the tour _after_ you come into this place. you will get _deep_ discounts (esp. if you sign up to a time-share presentation). Hope this helps. more

sinecostan

Overall a good experience: - Tour guide very knowledgeable and friendly - Good way to see a lot of the island in a day - Beginn...ing of tour was relaxed, end felt a little rushed - Look in the tide pools to the right of the black beach for green turtles! - Wine/tasting and dinner was rushed (we were the last group that day) - Good views of the volcano as a finale. more

Vince

It was a fun day. We got to see the lava’s red glow at night( but not the lava itself ). The Japanese coffee plantation was ok as... well as the lava tube. Our guide Brett was great! It was a long 12 hr day :) more

Curt

Overall experience wasn't too bad but can be further improved if more time is spend at the volcano national park as time spen...t at Kona coffee plantation and bakery was a little too long as this is not a food tasting tour. We expected more time to be spent at the national park for better value of money spent on this tour. more

Shereen

Despite the foggy weather (which is noone's fault) I enjoyed this trip but felt like it was a bit rushed. We departed from Hi...lo and did visit kalapana - Kaimu Black Sand Beach but the schedule says we visit the Painted Church of Saint Damien and it was just a drive by thought by the tour guide. At the Volcano's National Park, I was a bit disappointed again. The schedule says - Visit Thurston Lava Tube, Steam Vents, Jaggar Museum, Halemaumau crater. We didn't stop at any Steam Vents. The Jaggar Museum was closed (but i understand because of Hurricane Ana none was around so no big deal), and we had dinner as soon as we go there. Seriously? Would it not make better sense to see these things first and then have dinner? We rushed though the Lava Tube afterwards (in the dark but it doesnt matter since dark anyway). And then we went to see the lava viewing at night. Seriously that was the highlight of the evening. The tour guide was very informative and answered all our questions. We were a small group of 4 so there was lots of time to do everything. Just better planning for next time maybe? more

Ana

Enjoyed the view at the volcano, but disappointed with bus very tight no leg room especially for my 6' husband. The 2 hour ri...de back was very uncomfortable. Thought the driver/guide could have been more engaging. He talked to the people sitting up front and when another rider asked if he could turn his mic on so we all could hear he just stopped talking. Enjoyed the stops for the most part but in my opinion could have passed on the bakery since fellow riders spent too much time there we got less time at the black sand beach. more

Kathy

Our tour guide was very pleasant. Bus seats in the main rear were very uncomfortable with seatbelts that dug into ones backside. T...his tour although nice was a serious let down as far as volcano watching went. I was expecting something a bit more up close and personal. But we were on the same lookout available to any body who drove up to the observation area. Also, the dinner was not what I was asked to select from. I would highly recommend you take the salads they looked ever so much better than our sandwiches. Would I do this tour again? Probably not. Would I recommend this tour to others. Yes if you have limited mobility and are content with looking at the volcano activity from a sizable distance. Easily 500+ yds. more

endomorphioustravel

This tour is for older tourists. The lava viewing at the end of the tour (30 minutes) was great as was the black sand beach (30 mi...n). The information about volcanos and lava was very detailed. The 'hike' was a 20 minute walk along a paved path viewing others actually doing a real hike across the caldera. Dinner was NOT at Volcano House, but at a local farm, where we did a tour of the farm (40 min) :( and sat outside and ate a cold dinner - in the cold. Earlier in the tour we spent over an hour at a coffee farm - no tour - just a cold lunch in the lovely setting and a free sample of the coffee. there was a stop to buy donuts. The tour took an entire day - 11 hours - its a long drive, with too much time wasted. I would rather have driven straight there an 'hiked'! more
