When I booked this trip to Hawaii, I was not anticipating Kilauea to erupt actively. In fact when it came on the news that this volcano was spewing lava, I was ready to cancel this trip. However, Kilauea is on the Southeast end of the island and Waikoloa, where we were staying, was far from the volcanic activity. So, we not only kept our trip to big island of Hawaii but also added a helicopter ride to witness an active volcano, which is not something Californians can see on a regular basis, more of a once in a lifetime. Our pilot, Scott, was great. He took the time to explain what we were seeing, took into consideration of Sophia’s, my 9yo daughter, wanting to see and learn more about this magnificent phenomenon (in fact it was the whole reason for booking this helicopter tour), and took into consideration in providing a smooth, fun, helicopter ride without missing out on being able to see what we need to enjoy the experience of viewing the natural activities of an active volcano. This tour was so worth it. Highly recommended

1st time in a helicopter. 1 more bucket list item checked off. The views were spectacular and we were very fortunate to have the w...eather & Mother Nature in general on our side that day. Our captain/pilot was great and very knowledgeable. He encouraged us to ask questions & answered them very well. I personally think the whole experience was worth every penny but then again, we were a party of 2. Either way, I would highly recommend Bule Hawaiian and this flight package in particular. Got to see everything they advertised. Aloha! more

Jennifer Harriette

For my first flight in a helicopter, wasn't sure what to expect... but wow what a smooth & quiet aircraft the Eco-Star is...! The crew at Blue Hawaiian were courteous & professional and our Pilot Patrick was great - who was always checking to make sure everyone was comfortable during the trip and had ample opportunity to see & photograph each viewing site. more

Craig M

The driver was friendly. We saw amazing lava flow and beautiful landscape.

Hannah

Wonderful life experience! Our pilot Scott (should be right name) Is experienced tour guide and very patiently answered my 5yrs o...ld boy questions. Thank you more

Sunny

We really enjoyed our recent flight with Tim as our pilot. The sights were spectacular. Everything was organized like clockwork.... The equipment is clearly very safety and comfort focused. Tim was entertaining ad a very competent pilot. more

Barbara

Blue Hawaiian is the best. Flew with them on Oahu too and experience was just as good in Hilo. Having to pay to park at airport su...cks. Other than that, it was perfect. Flight is super safe, never felt nervous about it. Jeremy was our pilot and was very friendly and kept us informed everything we saw and questions we had. We took several turns to ensure everyone could see the lava and got in close. It will rain in Hilo often but that's the norm, be prepared for possible rainy or cloudy conditions but they will fly around any rains. They are used to it. Basically, well worth it, fly the Eco Star is most comfortable, don't let fear of flying be the reason you don't do this. None of the volcano ground tours will get you anywhere close to the action, this is the only way to see the volcano. more

Ray Family

Kilauea does what it wants, but the only way to really get an idea of what that is is to see it by helicopter. I've done that... on two occasions a couple of years apart. This tour was by far superior to the previous one. While we covered essentially the same territory, our pilot on this trip was pleasant, knowledgeable, and very professional. At the end of the tour, we had a much better understanding of the nature of the mountain; and the waterfalls, too, were majestic. more

Gerry

This was the best activity I had. I stayed with friends and did everything with local families but I just had to take this tour! M...y pilot Scott was great. He made sure everyone got great photo oppertunities. He was very infomative and funny. more

Melissa

Jeremy was an incredible pilot! We learned about the difference between lava and magma, saw some incredible sights, and had an ove...rall amazing time! A definite must do! more

Chere

We were hesitant to do this because we had never been in a helicopter, but WOW. So glad we did!! Awesome views of the volcano. ...Pilot (Jeremy) was very knowledgable and made the experience very interesting. He was very professional and skilled with the operation of the helicopter. An experience we will never forget!! Highly recommended!! more

Dale & Cheryl

Go for the Eco star! The viewing windows and space provide an excellent ride. Brandt was a great pilot who gave us an informative ...tour with funny antidotes. It's the closest feeling you can get to literally flying since it such a smooth ride, felt like we floated over billowing volcanoes and gushing waterfalls. Footage from video at the end had great clips inside and outside the helicopter but was too pixeled and fuzzy to want to purchase, hopefully as technology improves so will DVD. Pics and videos we took ourselves turned out good, even with an IPhone 6 and point and low end point and shoot camera. Take the ride, it's worth it! more

KJGS

It was worth every penny to get to fly over the lava fields. Grant, our pilot, has over 30 years experience piloting. He knows the... area well. "Luxury" flight only allowed for 4 passengers so there was plenty of room and we all had a great view. We were also given the opportunity to ask the pilot all kinds of questions regarding the lava fields and surrounding area. I highly recommend this activity. Very much a highlight of our trip. more

J. Ford

We had a great time flying over the volcano and seeing how lava makes an island. A very good way to see the vast flows. As on Kau...ai, the staff at Blue Hawaiian was great. They know their island and their love of it shows. more

Marsha

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters & former Marine Pilot Greg are the best! Little nervous about 1st time in a helo but there was no n...eed to worry! Ride was smooth , sights were amazing, pilot was very knowledgable & informative. more

Harpers in Texas

It was a great day to go on the Helicopter, pilot was very knowledgeable. I would go again, you got great views of the lava flows.... more

RJAK

The experience was really great! The views were amaizing! I recomend this experience!

Maruxa

Very professional staff and felt very safe. I would just say that this experience had a lot for me to compare to for me and my dau...ghter on this trip to Hawaii. We did ziplining, Parasailing, horse back riding and went from high-octane outdoor activities to passenger sightseeing. However, if I were to rank this tour as a stand-alone activity I would give it very high marks. To see the volcanic areas from the air is really interesting since you are seeing a "live" mass in motion (can't see it move but it is moving). Trees are burning from the lava, smoke and craters really lets you know who is in charge, nature. more

Cameron

Riding in a helicopter and seeing a live volcano checked off two of the entries on my life list. Scott, our pilot, was as excited... as we were to see the molten lava gushing out in neon orange waves. It was definitely one of those,"Oh wow!" moments. None of the retired ladies in our group had ever ridden in a helicopter before, and Scott had just the right combination of confidence and professionalism that reassured everyone. I would definitely fly with him again! This tour was the highlight of our trip, and I would recommend it to everyone. It was worth every penny! more

Teresa

Pilot was an excellent "stick" and well informed. Catered to our ooohh and ahhhhs. One of best experiences ever.

Curtis & Laura

Really great flight with amazing views of the volcano. Coleen was a superb pilot and great guide. We got some terrific views of t...he caldera and where the flow meets the sea. Well worth the money- a once in a lifetime experience. more

Lori

We are so happy we chose this helicopter tour. We got close for pictures and selfies and our pilot was entertaining!

Jamie

The views of the volcanoes were amazing! I was a bit disappointed in the waterfalls though. We didn't get as close as it appe...ars in the pictures! more

Michele

Seeing the lava in the cauldron coupled with the lava flow hitting the water and the massive lava fields was amazing. Throw in th...e waterfalls and it was an unforgettable experience. more

David

I brought my daughter and granddaughter to visit my parents who live in Hawaii. My parents had never done the helicopter tour and... it exceeded our expectations. Our pilot was also a biologist and gave us lots of information about the island. The kids (teenagers) couldn't stop smiling. We had four generations in that helicopter and all of us loved the experience. Highly recommended. more

Lisa

We travelled from Australia with our friends and took a helicopter tour of the volcano. The trip was amazing !! The pilot was inf...ormative and very knowledgeable. He had some great jokes and made us feel very safe. I would really recommend this trip to anyone. more

Marg from Australia

I was scared for my life, but it was amazing!!! Our pilot Eli was awesome!!! Highly recommend it!!!

Deana

Great ride in all aspects! Weather was excellent for viewing, even up at the crater.

Daryl Mitchell

The pilot was very friendly, attentive and made sure we could get the best out of our tour.

part

Excellent views of volcanoe, & informativepot Scott. No other way to get that perspective. Kids loved it.

Diane

Be ready for good music, family fun and good jokes...leave the Dad jokes back home!

Jim...aka Dad

Saw volcano with bubbling lava and lava glowing into the sea. Friendly and informative pilot. Highly recommended.

Redmond

Everyone should do this at least once! You get to see all the volcano has to offer.

Rena

The Blue Hawaiian helicopter tour was easily the best event our group had while on the Big Island. Everyone loved it. BH uses very... high quality helicopters and our pilot was well trained and very skilled. We all agreed that at no time did we feel unsafe. Our pilot was also very well informed and told us a lot of interesting things about the volcano and the Hilo side of the island. But, the views were the most memorable part of the trip. Don't forget your camera or you'll hate yourself. more

Terry from Texas

I name of this tour says it all! Live lava flows and incredible waterfalls. Our pilot, Peter, was fantastic and informative. I hi...ghly recommend the store to everyone. more

Ken

The trip was initially cancelled due to poor weather, but the Blue Hawaiian staff were all extraordinarily friendly and helpful, a...nd rebooked us for later that day. The flight was gorgeous, and the pilot (Patrick) was both professional and very entertaining. I'd happily recommend it to anyone. more

D&H

Went on the tour with our pilot Carl, who was very knowledgeable and friendly and fun. Showed us many interesting sites and found ...glowing lava on one of the flows. It was really a great experience! more

Greg

.......only spoilt by the lack of DVD afterwards. Apparently the inflight DVD recording didn't work - totally gutted, as th...is was an absolute one off for us from Down Under. more

kiwiuk

This helicopter tour was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. Checking in was a breeze. The pilot (Karl I think) was great..., really friendly and knowledgable and told us fascinating stories about the land. His mixed tape for the flight was a great accompaniment to the flight. Nothing can quite prepare you for how amazing it is to fly over a volcanoe crater spewing lava, I was truly awe struck and felt like a kid again! It really is the top experience I would recommend on the big island. more

Let me start saying one thing - Kilauea Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth and it's definitely a MUST SEE &...amp; DO if you are visiting Hawaii. I think everyone should explore the Volcanoes National Park as much as they can, and since I've hiked hiked the most popular sights before, this time I decided to get the bird's eye view from Kilauea. From start to finish Blue Hawaiian Helicopters was very professional and delivered a great service. After the check-in we watched a video about safety and what to expect on the tour. Due to the weather conditions my original flight was cancelled, however I was able to reschedule to a later time. It was worthy the wait! The aircraft was modern, very comfortable, large windows and the pilot was excelled and very experienced. He not only made us feel safe, but also shared a lot of interest facts about Hawaiian geology and history. We flew over dozens of waterfalls and over the most recent lava flows and it was crazy to see how close the lava got to some houses couple of years ago. The most incredible part thou was for sure seeing the lava flowing into the ocean and watching the bubbling lava lake inside the Pu'u 'O'o Crater (which you can only see if you are doing an air tour). I will never stop sharing these incredible memories with everyone around me. Thank you VELTRA & Blue Hawaiian Helicopters for the amazing experience. I highly recommend this tour, whether you are visiting the island just for a day or more, make sure to include a helicopter flight on your wish list. more

We loved our adventure!! Pat was a great pilot and tour guide! We had big smiles on our faces for the rest of the day! A can’t mi...ss in Hilo! The staff and crew were so nice and helpful with my mom who needed extra help getting to and from the helicopter. We highly recommend this excursion more

This was our first ever helicopter ride, so obviously we had goosebumps....our pilot, Nate, was a pro & the entire 50 mins tou...r was v nice. He went as close to the volcanoes/steam geysers as legally allowed. At the end, since we had spare time, he even took us over the ocean to do whale spotting....and spotted 2 whales too! We even purchased a $30 DVD of all our views & cockpit videos... more

Hi - Had an informative pilot who took us over the craters - and were able to see the lava entering the sea - best way to see it! ... I've been told on the walk in you are not able to the lava very well and are not able to get close. An exciting thing to do for your holiday and great viewing to see it all from the air! Glad we did! more

Patrice

A enjoyable flight, if they can they take you up to the vent, to try and see lava, which may not always be flowing, the staff are ...very friendly, organised. more

We thought this would be a island tour. Yes we wanted to see the volcano that we wanted to see more too. We saw very little other... than the volcano. more

Hard to beat the pictures you can get from the air on this trip.

We arrived at the appointed time for check in after making the 2 hour drive from the opposite side of the island. We were greeted ...nicely, had a short conversation, then found out the booking agent sent the email with the requested date/time, but the booking agent actually booked us for the following day. After a few minutes, the tour company resolved the oversight by calling in the standby pilot, upgraded us to the bigger helicopter (to fly with only us), and would provide us with a free copy of the flight video. The only issue was it would be an hour later than our scheduled time. This gave us time to eat lunch at the airport before our new check in time, so no worries. The flight was fun, great photo opportunities of the volcano areas/lava tubes, and very interesting facts from the seasoned pilot. I would use this company again despite the scheduling error. more

Would use Blue Hawaiian if visiting again on another island

It was a great experience with full explanation from the pilots along the way. We all did enjoy it. The only flip side was the vid...eo record from our helicopter which turned to be the old system on the disc and the quality was pretty bad, considering buying the better quality for the customers to buy later on. Not all of them have a good video camera. more

Really great ride. Beautiful scenery. Saw some lava and waterfalls but we were not very close to either. Worth the trip but don...39;t expect to get close more

Had a beautiful helicopter tour through volcanoes and waterfalls, but it almost didn't happen because Veltra didn't give... the right information to the company, resulting in us showing up at the airport and discovering our reservation didn't exist. more

4 of us flew from oahu for this helicopter flight. You need to check what is happening with the volcano first as we were expecting... to see some sort of action. The flow had obviously been active for sometime recently but what we saw was not what we were lead to believe was happening. Flight was good but dont take any notice of the pictures in advertising as they are deceptive. I k now this is a nature based activity and the company has no control over the volcano, but to over promise and under deliver is allways a recipe for disaster. The pilot Tim was excellent but the ground crew organinzation was lacking.Had us stand around in the sun for 30 minutes while they organised 5 flights at the same time.So dont expect to leave on the timeyou have booked, doesnt work that way.We hired a car and went to Volcano national park, fantastic and highly recommend that instead of this trip at only a fraction of the cost. The couple we shared with whilst disappointed could not speak more highly of the Maui trip they had with this company, so maybe consider that option more
