Frequently Asked Questions
What will we see on this tour?
You will see lots of pasture, volcanic, and forest land on the way up to the summit, with a stop for some epic island views from 9200' above sea level. You will also get to watch the sunset over volcanic mountain tops and star gaze under the open sky and through telescopes.
Will we get to look through the big telescopes on Mauna Kea?
No, these are not available even for human viewing since they are digitized and physically huge. The tour operates outside of the observatory public hours so you do not visit the observatory. Sometimes you get to see them open their domes and set the telescopes.
Will there be any health risks linked to going up Mauna Kea?
Mauna Kea has 40% less oxygen than sea level and 40% less air pressure than sea level. This lack of vital oxygen can be a very serious problem for persons with heart or lung disease.
What type of vehicle will be used?
Built for comfort, the 14 passenger 4v4 Van Terra micro-coaches are equipped with air conditioning, stereo sound, PA, phone, first aid and oxygen, parkas, and a telescope. Each van can hold up to 14 people.
Will we be guaranteed to see stars?
Mauna Kea enjoys an average of 325 clear nights per year. Most of the inclement nights are easily predictable. The weather is monitored on a daily basis and if poor scenic conditions are likely, the trip will be cancelled and a full refund given (or reschedule if available). Like any high mountain there can be unpredictable and fast changing weather at any time.
What is the dinner menu?
A hearty hot supper of 3-Cheese Vegetable Lasagna with a tasty homemade chocolate brownie (the brownie may have nuts). Gourmet hot cocoa, coffee and tea accompanied with biscotti while stargazing. Ingredients in the lasagna may vary from day to day based on local availability and the season of the year. Includes fresh lasagna pasta tomato sauce with herbs, cottage cheese, Parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, asiago cheese, garlic, onion, corn, spinach, broccoli, carrots, sun-dried tomatoes, squash, mushrooms and more.
Unfortunately, there is no alternate for dinner, if you would not like dinner or do not want this option, please contact us at anytime.
What kind of equipment will be used?
Your guides will provide you with new Celestron CPC 1100 telescopes that are equipped with Starbright XL coatings for 10% more light throughput than ordinary instruments. These scopes are computer automated and have spectacular optics. Because they are bigger and have better optics they gather about 100% more light than telescopes used on other tours.
What jackets sizes are available?
The jackets sizes are as follows:
Small ~145 lbs and under / ~63.5 kg
Medium 140~175 lbs / ~77 kg
Large 170~210 lbs / ~90.5 kg
XL 200~260 lbs / ~ 113 kg
How far in advance should I book this activity?
We recommend booking at least 3 weeks in advance. If you have very specific schedule requirements and are not flexible, please book sooner. Last-minute bookings are often possible, but availability is limited.
How cold does it get on Mauna Kea?
Average temperatures can reach 32° Fahrenheit or 0° Celsius.
Is there a shuttle in Waikoloa that stops at the Queen's Marketplace?
Yes, there is a shuttle that provides transport within Waikoloa Beach Resort with a stop at Queen's Marketplace. The pick-up locations include the Waikoloa Beach Marriott and the lower lobby of the Hilton Waikoloa Village. It operates daily from 10 am to 10 pm and runs every 15 minutes. The shuttle currently costs approximately $2 each way.
Tour actually worked out better than expected. The tour vans are nice and new, the guides are nice and knowledgeable. You go right... to the telescope summit and watch the sunrise followed by a great star gazing experience. The lasagna ain't great but bring snacks and you'll have a great time more
The tour was very interesting and Arthur our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the region. He answered all of our questions abo...ut the local environment as well as the history of the Hawaiian people. It was cold at the summit and a sweatshirt should be worn if you cannot handle the cold even with the atlantic parka and gloves that is supplied. The stargazing spot was incredibly clear and we could see hundreds of stars. We were also able to spot Venus, Jupiter, and several star systems through the telescopes provided. more

BEST NIGHTTIME ACTIVITY WE'VE EVER TAKEN PART IN !!!
WOW! What a fun evening! We were reluctant to do this activity but it turned out be the most enjoyable of all of our adventures in... Hawaii. You would never know you were in Hawaii atop this beautiful snow capped mountain. The sights are unbelievable and the sunset probably the best you will ever see. The staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating. This is a must do activity in Hawaii. You won稚 be disappointed. more
Absolutely amazing chance to view a sunset from the top of the world!
Awesome experience, you really feel like you are at the top of the world. Beautiful view and spectacular sunset.
This is the most amazing / moving / breathtaking / spectacular tour I've ever taken in my life... Growing up in a city, I...39;ve never seen a night sky like that before... i thought i was seeing a cloud, but turned out to be the Milky Way... there were literally millions of stars in the sky... made me feel that we are a part of this vast galaxy... the drive to Mauna Kea was fun... Pat, the guide, even stopped our vehicle to see the owl by the road... I even got to see the state bird, Nene, at the Onizuka Space Center... Mauna Kea is such a spritual place, and I will never forget the sunset.. Oh, you have to take a tour to go up to the summit since you need a permit... it's not like Haleakala on Maui where everyone can go.. Do this tour if you are going to be in the Big Island... I recommend everyone to do this tour... Just amazing!!! more
WE had a great time. Learned alot. Our guide Gordon was wonderful.Full of information, my husband thought he had studied this in c...ollege and he had not. more
the stargazing afterwards was fantastic the guides were both fantastic absolutely perfect!
We booked this trip because Dan is very interested in astronomy. As we drove up to the summit we began to understand the magnific...ence of the view. The sunset was unbelievable and the experience unforgettable. When we came down the mountain to do our stargazing I saw the moon through the telescope as I have never seen it before. The detail of the craters was amazing. It was a beautiful evening and night. Thank you. more

The tour was excellent and the guide had a lot of passion for what he does, so it was kind of contagious. He told us a lot of inte...resting stories making the trip very entertain. Dinner was very good and they provide us with coats and globes which we really needed. Then we had a second stop to explain to us about the telescopes and what is being measured. Finally we arrived at the top. I must admit I got very sick, but the guide had warned us that it could happen and recommended to sit on the floor. That is exactly what I did. I didn’t like the feeling at all, but I saw the most beautiful sunset that I have ever seen so it was worth the bad 5 minutes feeling LOL but I wouldn’t recommend it to people with heart problems. After the breath taking view we went down and watch the starts through a telescope. The guide explained a lot of things I didn’t know. I am not very knowledgeable about astronomy but I really learned a lot and enjoy the time. I will definitely recommend it as a must see more
I took my 74 year old mother. We had a great time. The guides were extremely knowledgable and helpful. The food wasn't the... best but that wasn't the focus of the trip. It was nice to have real metal silver ware to use while eating our of our box. I highly recommend this trip. My husband and his son will take it in two weeks. more
Loved the tour. The clouds dissipated in time for sunset and we had perfect timing for stargazing - got to actually see the Great... Red Spot on Jupiter. The tour guide was knowledgeable and very personable. If I was going back to Hawaii, I would do this all over again. Highly recommended, as it is a once in a life time opportunity. more
We were on our honeymoon, looking for something to do, this was so unique! Who would of thought we would be in a parka in Hawaii!... Pick this company! There were many up there, but these guys did it best, so thankful we paid a bit more and got an awesome experience. Staff was wonderful, thank you! more
Great transportation, very knowledgeable guides/drivers, wonderful "star gazing," well prepared food (too much for one p...erson to eat at one meal!) with stainless steel table service, warm parkas and gloves provided. Recommend wearing jeans, sneakers and socks, and perhaps a light jacket to wear under the parka. Understand that it will be cold at these altitudes and be wary of altitude sickness if you are normally near sea level. Be well rested when you go and altitude shouldn't be a problem since a couple of rests (and restroom stops) as you ascend are provided. On the ride back after excellent stargazing and a hot drink and cookie, really nice and varied selections of music were played! I've never seen such wonderful sky views! Hope to come again and bring grandchildren! more
We had a great guide Jim. His knowledge of Hawaiian history, plants and wildlife was great. When we were at the Summit with the la...rge world telescope buildings and when we did the viewing of the stars he was excellent there as well. Highly Recommend this tour. more

We had a wonderful guide/driver. She really gave us a lot of information on the way up and at the site. It was nice to not drive o...r worry about packing warm weather gear. Well worth the money. And the meal was very good and filling. more
Excellent tour. We'll worth the money. More educational than expected. We would have liked to have more time to ask questions... but the two guides did a fantastic job trying to see everyone was comfortable and amazed. We would book it again just because it was one of the highlights of our vacation. A job well done. more
Great tour guide amazing experience the best view on earth
The tour guides were ver knoweldgable, especaiily Chris. It was my childhood dream to see the Keck telescopes and it became a rea...lity, The sunset view was amazing and the diamonds in the sky, aka the starts were even better. I saw satellites and shooting stars and the milkyway galaxy. more
It was a very educational tour with a breathtaking view. I just expected astronomy but the tour guide knew a great deal about vol...canos, geology and island plant and animal life as well. The guide was awesome and I love taking tours with someone as trained and passionate about his work as this guy was. The food was so-so but it was hot and ready. The bus was cramped but it got us there and had big windows for great viewing. Once at the top, the observatories were incredible to look at as they opened up for evening viewing. The view of the sunset was also breathtaking, and not just from the lack of oxygen on top of the mountain. Once we headed back down for stargazing, our guides did a great job of pointing out astronomy as we used there 11 inch telescopes. Very great tour and highly recommended! more
As a family with teenagers this trip catered to our needs. Our trip up the mountain was very good and our stop at the visitors cen...tre for our meal gave us a chance to acclimatize before moving onto the summit. We made it to the summit and saw a wonderful sunset before moving onto some stargazing. Our artic jackets were more than handy and we arrived back in Kona by 11pm. more
Both me and my friend are big fans of stargazing. Being from Europe, we're used to completely different night sky and it war ...really refreshing to see the other-side-of-the-world's sky as well. Also, because Mauna Kea Summit has one of the clearest sky in the world, it took the stargazing to whole another level. It was really amazing experience and worth every penny. Also the guides knew like.. everything about the stars, so it was pretty educational too. Oh and by the way - the sunset seen from above the clouds at the summit? Magnificent! more
As a solo traveller from the UK it was a bit of a lucky dip as there are other providers of similar tours to this one.....worth ev...ery penny!our tour guide was Blake,he was very knowledgeable and friendly the sunset was truly amazing and the star gazing was fun and I learned alot about some of the stars..the telescopes was very good pieces of kit and we even saw the moon rising from the cloud horizon which was amazing too....we were very lucky with the weather conditions it wasn't windy at all, still a bit chilly on the summit tho..the parka jackets were good quality and clean....I could carry on,but gonna leave it here as amazing well worth it....one small note, the gloves supplied keep your hands warm but don't make it easy to take pictures on small cameras and mobile phones. more
Definitely do this during your holiday! The sunset and scenery at Mauna Kea is out-of-this-world and impressive. The stargazing af...terwards is fun, as well as amazing to see so many stars so brightly. The tour was excellent too, with well-informed guides and an un-rushed feel. Dinner was decent too. more
Whilst reading this activity when planning my vacation to Hawaii I knew that going to the summit and doing some stargazing would b...e something not to be missed. I'm glad it did not disappoint! The sunset atop Mauna Kea is amazing with only clouds below us, and we were able to view a great deal of objects in the night sky. It does definitely get chilly up there, and even though they supply Parkas and gloves be sure to wear some heavy pants and thick covered in shoes (lest your toes succumb to frostbite!) I have recommended this tour to friends whom I know will be going to Hawaii in the next few years. more
This was truly one of the more amazing ventures we have done. The guides were knowledgeable and professional. We learned about t...he various international observatories, saw a phenomenal sunset above the clouds at nearly 14,000 feet and then were treated to astrological viewing that was incredible. Just a spectacular evening. The only negative comment I have is the seating in the vans, particular if you are 6' or taller is very tight. That said, it is still a very worthwhile adventure. more
My wife and I took this tour on April 7. The day was fairly cloudy with some showers so we were concerned we wouldn't enjoy t...he full experience. We were wrong. Our guide Jim was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The tour itself was great, from the information delivered during the ride there, the amazing sunset at almost 14,000 feet and some terrific stargazing through their own telescope with excellent info to help you understand what you were looking at. The food was ok, brownie excellent. Overall we would highly recommend this tour. more
Visiting Mauna Kea was the main reason for my trip to Hawai'i and it was worth it! Our guide was informative (I wish I could... of recorded everything he said) and I learnt alot, not just about the mountain and the island but about astronomy and rock formations etc. A long day but worth having a tour as it takes the stress out of driving at high-altitude and you learn more by having a guide who visits the area daily. more
This was a fabulous excursion! Definitely a bucket-list must! Chris was so knowledgable and a wonderful guide. The entire experien...ce was incredible. I was traveling solo and felt completely included the entire time. I recommend this excursion above all others. At the end we had our own private astronomy lesson and were able to use the tour's private telescopes. It just could not have been better! more
I must state that the tour we booked to visit Mauna Kea was the highlight of all our activities on the Big Island. Greg was outsta...nding in his knowledge of the area and the solar system. My wife and I learned many new things when it came to star systems and planets. Viewing the International Space Station when it came by was unbelievable. The evening was moon free and perfectly clear. The Sunset at the Summit was breathtaking and the effects of 40% less oxygen was quite noticeable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting or planning to visit Hawaii. Keep up the great work and a big Aloha to Greg and Blake!!! more
What a fabulous tour led by Greg. Full credit to Greg, who was so engaging and informative, he really enriched the experience. T...he tour was out of this world literally. The telescopes, scenery, sunset!! I loved that we didn't race off , after the sunset, but stayed as the colours deepened. We were the last tour to leave the sunset location. The food was good! Lasagne and a very yummy brownie and later hot chocolate and biscotti whilst we star gazed through massive telescopes. I was totally impressed with this tour. In fact raved about it so much when I got back to the hotel that my friend went the next day and also loved it!! more
Its a must go, when visiting Big Island. Sunset view is breathtaking.
We went to the top, little lightheaded but no big deal. The stop at the lower altitude helps. Dinner was fun, just like going out ...camping, no frills, you get your portion and you eat it. Lasagna was actually very tasty, not overcooked, then back into the van( very comfortable), and up we go. The summit was surreal, enveloped in the mist and clouds with large telescopes all around. We did not see the sunset because of the clouds. But it was still a great experience. We also had bad luck with star watching despite our driver's best efforts. At the end we were told that we will get a full refund minus our food ( $19). That was what convince me that the company stood behind its word. I plan to take the same trip as soon as I get back, and I will. I believe that given all the variables every trip is unique and worth taking. It was a great experience, we felt well taken care of and completely safe. Good job Veltra and our guide and driver Greg. Thank you. more
I had a great time, over the clouds and under the stars. This is a must see in Hawaii.
Our guide is David and he was very kind and informative. He provided a lot of island guide and knowledge of astronomy and geograph...y. Everything in the tour were just fine. We had all things we needed. I loved the parka very much. Without the parka and the gloves, I would be freezed at the height of 4000m. When I saw the milky way in the sky, I was very very touched. It's incredible!!!! more
Gordon, our Driver / Guide was very knowledgable of the Island and was a great guide of the cosmos. I will definitely be returnin...g and have already shared some of the pictures i took, and people still dont believe how great the stars you can see with the naked eye. I couldn't believe how great it looked almost fake it was that Great of an experience. Thanks for the Dinner and Hot Drink selection at the end of our star gazing tour. #Returning2017 Andrew. more
This trip was a really fun experience as a contrast to the normal beach and ocean explorations that a visit to Hawaii normally inc...ludes. The guide was very informative and the trip was planned well. The van was very comfortable (big Mercedes). Climbing above the clouds made it feel like we were going to another world. The sunset from the top amongst all the observatory domes was incredibly colorful and the photography was cool with the domes. The second part when we went down the mountain and set up the telescopes was fun too. The guide had an excellent presentation and mastery of the topics. I highly recommend-it was out of the ordinary and visually spectacular. more
Our guides were Arthur and Justin. Both are funny and knowledgeable. This tour surprised us in so many ways. It is crazy that you ...can go from beach weather to freezing winds in a matter of hours. The parkas definitely help. I would recommend some layers of clothes, jeans, and good shoes. Bring a scarf or beanie. For those who live in the country, you do not realize how fortunate you are to not have light pollution. The stars that we saw were amazing. Your eyes adjust and focus so well on all the bright twinkles because there's no surrounding light. It's hard to explain but you feel like a child who's just seen something new and cool. Light pollution is real. On a good night in the city, I can probably see maybe 10 stars. Here, the volume is overwhelming. The location of Hawaii lets you see a lot more. Not only do you see the stars, but you can see distant galaxies as well our own milky way. Primitive, primal, natural are some other ways to describe experience. The sunset on Mauna Kea was also a fantastic experience. Arthur and Justin are safe and excellent drivers. You see rental cars driving up the volcano on unpaved roads when they shouldn't. It's better to have the experts take you to the summit. We attended this tour January 3, 2018. This gave us the rare opportunity to see the wolf moon and all the stars. I never knew how much light the moon provided at night. I would do this again and recommend it to anybody who visits the Big Island. more
Its was a great tour as advertised, Pick up was on time. and Gordon is a good driver, friendly, take good cares of everyone. He an...d his buddy provided a great service for the entire tour. This is a great tour to take if you are just visiting big island for vacation. We were traveling light, dont want to prepare winter cloth. the tour provides what we need on the mountain. It was one of the best tour we took in big island. definitely will do again~~ more
If you have to choose one paid activity/tour to do on the Big Island, my friends and I definitely recommend the Mauna Kea Summit a...nd Stargazing tour! It was an experience of a lifetime! From the AMAZING views from sunset to stargazing to the amazing, informative and friendly staff, I would definitely do this tour again, if only for the views! more
We learned so much about the island volcanos on this tour. The views are amazing and star gazing is outstanding. Believe the advic...e to be prepared for the cold. It was 37 at the top (in July)! We were fortunate to see the glow of the lava from the volcano. Apparently an unusual occurance. more
I had a star gazing tour to Mauna Kea and have to admit this was a real STAR of my 2-week travel across Big Island. Our tour guide... Maka had deep extensive knowledge in geology, volcanology, astronomy, ethnography, history of Hawaii and was just a very nice guy and interesting interlocutor. Maka was so kind to call me about my precious photo filters I left behind in the tour bus ad help me get them back. Thank you, Maka! more
Overall, this trip was fantastic, and you'll never see another sunset and night sky like it anywhere else. However, be wary ...of poor food (bring a sandwich) that is offered, and make sure your bus has air conditioning that works since it can be a long ride up the side of the mountain in 90+ heat. Pros: Great trip Romantic Educational Cons: No air conditioning in the van Poor food more
this was my second time and it was better than the first time, and I brought my family this time.
Wonderful experience! Felt a bit rushed with having our dinner. Not enough bath room breaks, especially after having a cup of coff...ee after star gazing and then having a two hour drive back to our hotels, made for a very uncomfortable ride home. more
The temperature was colder than I expected but the viewing was spectacular!
It was a once in a lifetime experience. It's very cold up at the summit, but the sunset and stargazing were worth it. The on...ly complaint I had was that the dinner (vegetable lasagna) was terrible. more
I expected this trip would be a magical chance to get to stand "on top of the world" and watch the sunset and see the st...ars. It was indeed spectacular. The stargazing portion was really geared towards people who are absolute astronomy beginners, so if youre an amateur astronomer you'll be a little disappointed that you don't get to see more. But the guides were great the whole time giving a great history of the Big Island ranging from botany to politics to Volcano development. Don't expect a very lively time, if you're there as an individual it's a quiet, lonely world up there. but would be great as an adventurous couple to see something totally out of the ordinary. more
This was my husband's favorite excursion. Our guide was very knowledgeable. The views from the summit are breathtaking and w...ell worth the effort. more
An extremely informative tour, friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. The tour bus is slightly crammed. A lifetime experience.
Enjoyable tour hosted by knowledgable guides. Great chance to see above the clouds and beyond. Only downside was the meal -a veget...able lasagne with a dried out top from being heated to long. more
From the top of Mauna Kea you truly see forever. However, be prepared! At these heights it is also breath taking... that is, the...re is less air up there!! The guides were great and prepared you for the trip in every way. The dinner was good and the star gazing after coming half way back down was amazing. more
Seeing the sun set at the top of mauna kea was a once in a lifetime adventure. However dInner wasn't that great - was handed... the food to eat at the visitor center -no where to sit and eat and had to balance dinner plate on my lap. This was not what I expected. As well, food was not very good. No drink included. Astronomy lesson after sunset was interesting. Although overall the trip was ok I did not think it was worth the money. more
I would not recommend this activity unless you've already done most everything else on this island. Everyone we talked to af...ter getting back was dis-appointed. It sure isn't what I thought. First the transportation isn't very convenient. Getting to and from the pick up points should be improved. Next on the way up the mountain we stopped at a gift/visitor shop. Thats where we had a cardboard box dinner in the van. Someone else said bring a sandwich. I also recomend that. Going on up the hill. The observatories we only got to see from the outside, and was just told about them. We did watch a nice sunset at 13,780 feet of elevation. It was a nice view although I like the sunsets over the beach better. After the sun went down we left and went down to about 7000 feet elevation and they set up 11inch Celestron telescopes. Nice telescopes, i have a friend who has one. We saw several stars and clusters ect. Beautiful clear sky. Chitchen-Itza ruins in Mexico was just a clear a more
