What To Expect
Shopping takes on a whole new transformation in this mecca of ethnic, eclectic and simply fascinating items you can purchase and take home.
These markets will immerse you into the gaucho culture, the main attraction of the trip being the antiques. Feel like you're going up your grandmother's attic as you peruse the different collections of strange and beautiful things.
First we will arrive at the San Telmo fair, where you will be serenaded with an orchestra and entertained by tango dancers as you peruse there 270 stalls!
Did you know that there is a different name for cowboy in every Hispanic country? The gauchos are the Argentinian cowboys, known for their hunting prowess. The artifacts in these fairs reflect their laid-back lifestyle. Though they may have been identified as poorly dressed, their wardrobe is a proverbial map of all the places they have been and all the storms they have weathered throughout their lives. Pitted against Europanizing tendencies, these rugged men have survived the strongest of storms!
Enter the town declared as the Neighborhood of the Argentinian Gaucho. We will have time to visit the old archway of the market and enter the Museo Criollo de los Corrales, filled with relics of the clothing, tools and everyday objects of the Gauchos. Witness the evolution of the stockbreeding industry of Argentina that jetstreamed into prominence as the world leader of the meat trade through its vrious exhibits. You will also see their weapons, knives, carriages, animals, paintings and even the famous ranch!
Later, we will have lunch at the fair stalls. Choose from the traditional delicacies of tamales, humita en chala, locro and of course, empanadas. A delicious Argentinian wine will accompany your meal.
For the rest of the day take time to visit the Oviedo Bar, the historical hangout of the slaughterhouse workers, and feel like a Gaucho yourself as you bring home the relics of Argentina's rich cowboy culture.
