What To Expect
Tour the "Gateway to South India," fourth largest city in the country and biggest city of the south. St. George Fort (historically know as a white town) is located on the banks of Bay of Bengal. It is a military architecture marvel which was erected as a trading post and later evolved to be the origin of modern Indian Army. One of the most prominent tourist spots in Chennai, it is presently serving as the administrative headquarters of the legislative assembly of the state of Tamil Nadu. The most popular structures inside the fort include St. Mary's Church, Museum, Wellesley House and Clive House.
St. Mary's Church, within the Fort St. George was established in 1680 and is one of the oldest churches in India.
The Fort Museum exhibits a large repository of arms and armaments and a wide range of artifacts dating back to the British period.
Clive House formerly wher British campaigner Robert Clive once resided and now houses government offices.
Wellesley House is a major attraction of the St George Fort. The banquet hall displays the paintings of the Governor of the Fort along with the other high officials of the Regime. The battlements is adorned with the canons belonging to Tipu Sultan.
Flag post at Fort St. George, the tallest in India, stand 150 feet high and is made of pure teakwood.
Santhome church Commonly known as Santhome Church, the International Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica has an underground tomb chapel where pilgrims can pray in front of the sepulchre of St. Thomas.
Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a temple of Shiva located in Mylapore, a suburb of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Built around the 7th century CE, it is a good example of Dravidian architecture
The Government Museum is one of the best museums of India and the prime attraction of tourism, next to the popular temples and monuments. The Government Museum has a treasure trove of artifacts and other invaluable historical objects from the Chola, Hoysala, Vijayanagar and Chalukya dynasties; it also includes an impressive collection of Chola bronze art. The National Art Gallery features a fine collection of paintings, handicrafts and bronze artifacts.
In the evening, visit Marina Beach to relax and unwind and watch the sunset. This famous beach the pride of Chennai is second longest beach in the world. Overlooking the Madras University on the sands of Marina adjacent to Anna Square lies the grand memorial of M.G. Ramachandran, the matinee idol.
