Loop around this mountain of Doi Suthep to the peaceful district of Samoeng. Cycling by road bike on the good tarmac roads, the undulating terrain and the lush green scenery is the perfect way to explore the Lanna countryside. Watch out for elephants, they have right of way!
If you look west from Chiang Mai you'll see the mountain of Doi Suthep, it looks rather imposing, but luckily there's a lovely loop around this mountain to the peaceful district of Samoeng.
Using a road bike is the best way of achieving the 120 kilometer loop around the mountain and back to Chiang Mai. The good tarmac roads, the undulating terrain and the lush green scenery make it a perfect way to explore the Lanna countryside.
We start our journey by transferring out of Chiang Mai to avoid traffic and set our bikes up by the beautiful Huey Tung Tao lake, a favorite with locals for fishing and picnicking. From here we cycle on quiet country roads by fertile forests, beautiful fruit orchards and lush plantations. Watch out for elephants, they have right of way!
Our ride continues up through the narrow valley of the Mae Sa river. On our route we'll see the river tumble down numerous cascades. In the higher part of the valley we'll also pass orchid farms and other flower fields that are grown for the Chiang Mai market, as well as fields of vegetables cultivated by the Hmong. We'll take plenty of refreshment breaks during our climbs and stop for lunch at the village of Samoeng. This area was the first settlement of the Lanna people, who were escaping from a Burmese conquer in the 18th century. The altitude of 1100 m will mean it's a bit cooler here and a perfect place for lunch.
As we come around the mountain we have one tough rise, but once over the top it's downhill to the fertile foothills south of Chiang Mai. We head back towards city following the ancient trade path along the Ping river which was the highway of the day some 800 hundred years ago. We'll stop for a last break at the ruins of Wiang Khum Kham, the site of a buried city which was the first settled area in the Chiang Mai region, and then cruise back into town. No doubt we will be left with a sense of satisfaction of a great ride and an insight into the lives of the Lanna people and an appreciation for the beauty of Northern Thailand.
This trip is fully supported and you'll have a constant supply of cold drinks and fresh fruit. Your guide's expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty.
