What To Expect
Visit a local family in Cochin and learn about the culture of food and family life. The tour begins with basic introductions to the family. You will then head to the kitchen for a day of South Indian cooking!
South Indian cooking is relatively different from North Indian food. In the south, food is infused with coconut oil and a variety of spices. Discover various spices, local food and get to interact with the family.
Cook a delightful meal prepared with fresh ingredients consisting of local products and seasonal vegetables. Blend spices such as turmeric, cumin, mustard seeds, pepper, ginger and garlic paired with vegetables such as okra, beans or lentils. Indian meals usually consist of at least two to three curries cooked on a daily basis. These are most often eaten with rice or rice flour dishes in the south.
Your meal will include a lesson on making Indian Masala chai or flavored tea. For dessert, taste traditional 'mithai' infused with green cardamom or jaggery.
Get involved in making the food and enjoy a home-cooked meal with the family, who will teach you how to eat with the hands. In India, it is customary to eat with the right hand. It is also common for men and children to eat before women. House guests however, eat first followed by the rest of the family.
Understand the flavors and the food culture of Southern India on this three hour home cooking experience!
