What To Expect
There is no end to what may be discovered during a rain forest exploration in Sri Lanka. Spend a full day at Sinharaja, a World Heritage site (Nature), Sri Lanka's most beautiful and biggest rainforest. Start your adventure with an early morning pick up from Colombo and enjoy a scenic ride passing by the Southern Highway from Kottawa to Dodamgoda and Kalawana. Upon arrival, board a 4WD jeep and enjoy a thrilling ride to the entrance gate of the rainforest.
It is situated close to Ratnapura, between the villages of Rkwana, Deniyaya and Mathugama, Sinharaja Forest Reserve is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Lion Kingdom and it is a treasure trove of endemic species, including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
A variety of indigenous plants and animals, following rivers and silent streamlets cover up nearly 9800 hectares. Out of a total of 830 indigenous flowering plants in the island Sinharaja has nearly 500 plants and out of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic bird species 20 have made Sinharaja their home. Reptiles include the endemic green pit viper and hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs. Invertebrates include the endemic common bird wing butterfly and the inevitable leeches. This awe-inspiring place cannot be further described by words, you have to experience it!
