What To Expect
Cordoba's Mosque Cathedral is the most important monument of the western islamic world: its design reminds a Moorish Palace, built to impress. The first construction dates back to 736, in the early middle ages, and on its current design you can see the different artistique styles from that moment on: there are gothic influences but also from the Renaissance and even the Baroque, so typical in Spanish churches.
Actually, the history of the Mosque remains from the Vissigoth period, on which a first Basilique was built and which was called San Vicente. On its suins, the Mosque was constructed, under the muslim domination: the Mosque Alhama, the most important of the city.
In 1523, a Cathedral was finally built inside the monumental Mosque, maybe due to the streinght and the breathtaking beauty of the Muslim Temple, but also to show the victory of the Christianity in Spain.
Today declared World's Heritage Site by the UNESCO, the Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba, attracts the look of travelers from all around the world. In Cordoba, it is with no doubt a must see monument.
