What To Expect
Explore the Culion Island and gain an in depth understanding of its history while surrounding yourself with the beauty of nature on this majestic piece of land.
In 1906, the Americans decided to move all the lepers in the country to the Culion Island, which was considered neither cruel nor unusual given the concern of leprosy at that time. The island housed the world's largest leper colony with 16,000 patients at its peak. A permanent cure for leprosy was discovered in 1987, and the disease was considered eliminated from the island by year 2000. Today, the island which was once called the Land of the Living Dead, has undergone a remarkable transformation with its stunning landscape and its own story to tell.
Upon arrival at the island, visit the La Immaculada Concepcion Church, a 17th century church built by the Augustinian Recollects. The church still has the stoned facade, the red roofing, and the statue of the Virgin Mary. Moreover, cannons left by the Spaniards can still be seen near the church.
Stop at the well-preserved Culion Museum and learn more about the island's rich history. Find a vast collection of records and artifacts, including historical news clippings and letters during the decades of struggle. You will also see photos, murals, and memorabilia used on the island.
Then, climb 333 steps up the Agila Hill to reach Pulang Lupa View Deck, the highest point in the island. The hill features a gigantic replica of the Philippine Health Service seal, an eagle made from boulders and rocks, which the lepers built in 1926. From the top of the deck, marvel at the breathtaking view of the island's beautiful land and seascape below.
After a sumptuous lunch, this tour will then take you to one of the best snorkeling and diving destinations south of Coron Island, the Coral Garden Reef. Feast your eyes on rainbow colored coral reefs and a variety of fishes as you glide through its clear waters.
Your snorkeling adventure will continue to the Lusong Gunboat Shipwreck, a shallow wreck of a Japanese vessel during the WWII and is one of the many war relics in and around Coron Bay. You may also spot sea turtles and dolphins during your fun-filled adventure.
You will then be dropped off at your Coron hotel in the late afternoon.
