What To Expect
The Moais are monolithic carvings of the Rapa Nui people's deified ancestors. Their creation is remarkable due to the creative and technical advancement of the sculptures considering the resources available at the time.
Legend has it that the 7 Moai statues that face the ocean represent the seven explorers sent by King Hotu Matu'a before his expedition to colonize faraway lands.
Visit the Puna Pao where the Rapa Nui made the Pukao, the headdresses placed on some Moai statues. Visit Ahu Uri Aurenga , a statue placed in line with the winter solstice, representing a season sacred to the Rapa Nui people. It is of great importance to the astronomical practices and of great insight to the island's ethnic culture.
