What is Olowalu?

Also called "Turtle Reef", Olowalu is an underwater "cleaning station" for local sea turtles and other marine megafauna such as rays and skates. When they come to the reef, smaller tropical fish like to eat algae and other microorganisms off of their shells and backs. This provides a tasty meal for the smaller fish, and the turtles can move more freely through the water. Also, it means you are more likely to see these amazing creatures as they all swim about their day, so everyone wins!

Local expert tips

• Olowalu is a protected reef, so you know you are seeing nature in all its beauty. That said, please make sure you bring/are wearing reef-safe sunscreen, and dispose of any trash in the proper receptacles to do your part in keeping our oceans clean and clear for generations to come.
• While you’re out on the water, don’t sleep on the land—the views of sprawling Mauna Kahalawai (West Maui mountains), Kahoolawe and Haleakala can’t be beat.
• Winter is whale season! You likely won’t see them while snorkeling, but while you’re on the boat in the ‘Au ‘Au channel, keep an eye out for some migrating whales breeching and playing. Occasionally dolphins can be seen as well, though they usually like to come out earlier in the day.
• Recommended attire: Wear a bathing suit and bring a towel, plus a light jacket or sweater especially for the morning. Don’t worry about snorkeling equipment or flotation devices—all will be provided for you, along with instructions or lessons if needed.
• Recommended items to bring: if you plan on taking pictures (and we hope you do!), make sure to bring a strap for your camera or phone. If you would like to get an alcoholic drink from the bar, please bring a valid photo ID.

Boat information

All Trilogy boats are 55’ or 65’ oceangoing catamarans, and each is equipped with marine heads (bathrooms), changing areas, and either covered cabins, awnings, or both.

How to get there?

Ma’alaea Harbor is located just off of the Honoapiilani Highway and near the Maui Ocean Center aquarium, and you can find Trilogy in Slip 62 on the break-wall (south) side of the harbor.

Parking Information: Affordable parking can be found near the harbor. It is recommended to arrive early so you can get your QR code and check-in.

Driving distance from main resort areas: Ma’alaea Harbor is easily accessible by car in about half an hour or less from Kihei, Wailea-Makena, or Lahaina, depending on traffic conditions. Plan on 40 minutes from Kapalua; or about 2 hours from Hana-Maui, on the eastern coast. Rideshare options are available if you don’t have a car. Public transit to the harbor is easiest from Kihei or Lahaina; take the 15 or 29 bus to the Ma’alaea Harbor Village stop.
